Brought to you by Whitehall non-profit Gold Junction Presents, the staff and cast of MSIP are excited to be bringing this energy-packed, keep-you-on-your-toes comedy to the stage. After a summer of anticipation, information, and hard work by Kit Mather the old mural came down and the beautiful new mural went up last Thursday. If you haven't seen it please go to Jefferson Fresh Foods and see it. It is bright, beautiful, and clear. It was a full day to remove the old mural and reinstall the new one. Thanks are due to many people first of all to Kit Mather who gave up her entire summer and worked every single day to make this vision come to fruition. Thanks also to the...
“This is probably the only political forum where none of us are fighting with one another,” Mary Janacaro Hensleigh, candidate for Jefferson County Commissioner, said with a laugh before the October 27 Jefferson County Candidate Forum began. And it may be true. The candidates (Jefferson County Commissioner: Hensleigh and Dan Hagerty; Sheriff/Coroner Chad Cross and Tom Grimsrud) were nothing but cordial to one another, mainly because of their agreements of what is important in their elected positions: upholding the Constitution, keeping an ope...
WOW, WHITEHALL!! You are beyond amazing! The Whitehall Garden Club may have shaken out their aprons, wiped down the tables, and swept the floor, but their giddy smiles remain. The Community was given the opportunity to BAKE, BID (on), and BUY PIE, and pie oh pie did they ever!!! Thank you so much for making the Fall Festival Pie for Non-Profit booth so very successful. It had its most profitable year to date, and most nonprofits were designated as recipients. Forty pies were donated to the...
The news is out! Mountain West Automotive is no longer a CarQuest parts dealer! No, there is no new owner - Mountain West Automotive will continue to be locally owned and operated by Jim Tingler, as it has been for the last 29 years, but has switched to Parts City to provide the community with better coverage and availability of parts, in most cases same-day delivery with an afternoon truck leaving Bozeman, Helena, and Butte as hub stores. In addition to selling auto parts, Mountain West Automotive also offers battery testing, custom hydraulic...
Daniel Thomas Volz passed away on October 27th, 2022 surrounded by family at the age of 54 after a courageous battle with cancer. Even in his final week of life, Dan continued to display his kind-hearted and joking nature, delighting his family with small jokes and pranks from his recliner. He will always be remembered for his kind-hearted nature; strong work ethic; love of family, cooking, eating and chatting with everyone he meets. Dan was born in Deckerville, Michigan on April 23, 1968. He... Full story
Dear Editor, Another fine piece from Jon Goff at Montana Decides (The Long Green Mile, 10-19-22.) I was struck by this line: “benefits (or lack thereof) are rarely considered or challenged due to the assumption that all public expenditures are always worthy without question.” Why might this be the case? To my eye, we have lived our entire lives in an ever-more-corrupted system. We’re collectively sitting on top of generations if not centuries of political malfeasance, corporate and financial shenanigans, a two-tiered justice system, mains...
Dear Editor, Serving as an effective county commissioner requires at least three attributes: collaboration, a can-do attitude, and vision. Whitehall Mayor Mary Hensleigh exemplifies all these (and more), which is why I enthusiastically endorse her for Jefferson County commissioner. I’ve seen too many county commissions across the state paralyzed by the grinding of personal axes, partisan bickering, and an inability to focus on the big picture. In the words of one of my colleagues, it’s hard to roll up your sleeves when you’re wringing your...
Dear Editor, Throughout Montana’s modern history we’ve consistently had a mix of republican and democratic leadership, with one party as governor and always a mix in congress. When I was a kid, our governor was Ted Schwinden (D), followed by Stevens (R), Racicot (R), Martz (R), Schweitzer (D), Bullock (D), and Gianforte (R). If you keep looking back, you’ll see a surprisingly balanced “purple” trend in the office with 9 republicans and 15 democrats. Our congressional delegation has exemplified a similar trajectory, currently with senators...
Because some trees take so long to grow, it’s possible the average piece of paper is technically older than the average person. Alphabet soup in Japan must be wild. The last thing a conspiracy theorist wants is for everyone to agree with them. The fact that Google automatically completes our searches shows how unoriginal we all are. Sand is the only material you need to make an hourglass. Considering how short our attention spam has become, even a 5-second ad is torture. You’re always eating your own snot but it’s only considered gross if you t...

Keith “Weeds” Dykman benefit auction will be held on December 3 at the Pony Gym. Thanks to Sue Allen and Scott Lambert for organizing this event. Weeds fell off his roof while working on a home renovation project. The fall fractured his T12 vertebrae, and three ribs, and severely damaged his spinal cord. It is uncertain at this time if he will regain full use of his legs. He will be transported to the Craig Neurorehabilitation Hospital in Colorado on December 1. The funds generated will benefit Weeds in his rehabilitation and recovery aft...
Certain people leave lasting impressions on us, don’t they? I have been taking some time to research the character quality of grace from the Bible’s perspective, and I have been recalling personal examples. The exercise has been off and on for over a month. We are inspired by those who are positive, often aiming our life in the same direction. Likewise, we also watch those who display negative attributes, affirming that such a quality is something we do not want to emulate. Who is it that inspires you? The late preacher Billy Graham said, “When...

In a Volunteer Hall decked out in spider webs and skeletons for “Fright Night” festivities, candidates for County Commissioner and Sheriff faced off Monday evening at a Boulder Monitor Forum – most often revealing how much they agreed on key issues facing Jefferson County. The forum brought together four native Montanans, all of them longtime residents of Jefferson County with extensive careers as public servants. Chad Cross and Tom Grimsrud, who are vying for the Sheriff’s job, both have worked in Jefferson County law enforcement for about t...

Next week is a strange week for many people. The Library will be open on Monday, closed on Tuesday for Election Day, open on Wednesday and Thursday, then closed on Friday for Veterans Day, and open on Saturday. The book drop is always open so feel free to return things in there as we empty it even when we are closed. Enjoy the time off; I plan to finish some quilting projects! The Friends of the Library will be meeting on Thursday, November 13th at 5 PM. They will be finishing up plans for the Christmas Stroll and working on winter projects....
As millions of children attend school this year, more than one in five of them will experience bullying, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. And in a national study by the Cyberbullying Research Center, nearly 21% of tweens said they had been a target, aggressor or witness to bullying online or by other electronic means. As parents search for ways to protect their children, a growing group of families are turning to an unlikely source for practical guidance: the Bible. Anaconda residents Jason and Tressa talk with their...
Whitehall's Screams Come True Haunted House, Hay Maze, and Escape Rooms is celebrating the completion of its fourth year and its biggest year to date, with nearly 4,000 people going through the haunt over the course of six days. "I'm really hoping the community and the local businesses see the value of this event and the revenue that it brings into the town, not only to Gold Junction Presents, but to bars, gas stations, restaurants, and more," said Pullman. The event donates a portion of its...
