  • Column: Five Pounds of Turkey

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Nov 16, 2016

With Thanksgiving approaching, I'm eagerly watching the weather forecast to see if I'll be able to make it to my hometown next week. I haven't been there since spring, so it would be really nice to spend time with my family and close friends. Last year was one of the few Thanksgivings I was not able to make it home, and it was a little bit of a strange feeling. The day is about family, friends, and enjoying what we have in our lives. But it's also about the food, and lots of it. No matter where I spend Thanksgiving, I always have the same...

  • Between the Stacks

    Jeannie Ferriss, Whitehall Community Library|Nov 16, 2016

It was the third year of the Civil War, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln declared that each November there would be a national day of Thanksgiving. It was based on a celebration which first took place in 1621, when the Wampanoag Indians and the Plymouth settlers shared a meal after the fall crops had been harvested. The New World had been a cruel lesson for the pilgrims with only 51 settlers surviving out of 102 original arrivals. Now life was once again hard for a nation at war with itself. Would the long Civil War ever end? It would take...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Nov 16, 2016

Glenn: You are not only clever, but sneaky! Those Trojans have been amazing and to think you would include the Yankees in the same column. Paul’s brother, Shane, watched the Ronan game and his comment was that the 1978 Trojan team couldn’t touch them and they were pretty good but not comparable to the 2016 team. With Sacry and Joy genes, Rebekah (Bekah) Joy took those genes and added dedication and hard work and became the most valuable player for the Missoula Sentinel Spartans soccer team. • Jefferson County Commission Update

    Leonard Wortman, Jefferson County Commissioner|Nov 16, 2016

Hi Folks, Well, the election is over. Some of it went the way I wanted and some of it didn’t, but that’s the way it generally works. Even though I was running unopposed, if I spent any money, even encouraging people to vote or to thank them for their support I would be required to open a bank account and fill out a bunch of paperwork. This had to be one of the strangest elections I can ever remember. I still can’t believe Donald and Hillary were the two best people we could find in this whole country. But, if you think about it, who in their...
