July 9, 1997 A gifted and talented program, the teacher master contract negotiations, and a pair of new school policies were the dominant issues at the July 2nd Whitehall School Board meeting. The Board unanimously approved the teacher contract, which ended three months of negotiations between the Teacher Union and the Whitehall Board of Trustees. The contract called for a 2.38 percent pay increase in each of the next two school years and for the district to contribute to the teacher health insurance program. The Jefferson County Commissioners...
It’s not always easy living in the rural West, with customs so entrenched that everybody takes them for granted. What makes it hard for the newest newcomers is that they’re caught up in a mysterious culture. Learning the Old West code was easy decades ago. Novelist Zane Gray’s “Code of the West” told men to wear a hat only outdoors, to never wave but nod at someone on horseback, and to treat women with chivalry. You — and you were always presumed to be male — were also advised to take your gun belt off before sitting down to eat. But here we a...

As the landscape around us slowly transforms, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of nature, of undeveloped places in our lives, places that serve as refuges for wildlife while allowing us to stop and consider the treasures that make this state what it is. Missouri Headwaters State Park is one of these places, one where each trail tells a story about the land and the people who inhabited it. This National Historic Landmark, where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers flow together...

The July 6 WGC social time began with a delightful arrangement of snacks provided by Barbara Lien and Laura Horn. See the beautiful Clearwater and Swan River Valleys and enjoy this popular campground park known for its smooth water, good fishing, and water sports. Placid Lake was named after the Adirondack Mountains' Lake Placid by Hiram Blanchard, a New Yorker who moved to the area in 1892 to form the Clearwater Land and Livestock Company. A dam was completed below the lake's Owl Creek outlet in 1972, and the park was created in 1977. Did you know that the official Montana State Parks license plate is a...
I was finally able to go on a vacation a while back. My cousin and I headed down to Florida, the state where you look like you have chicken pox all the time, due to the mosquitoes. We went to one of the local watering holes and got the best soup I have ever had. It was like clam chowder but with frog legs. I was able to sweet-talk the wonderful old-lady cook into sharing the recipe. She looked to be 70 years old but was really 95, still hunting and cooking all the food for the bar/grille, with help from some of the local kids until she gets...

"That's it! I'm done!" Bella felt these words to the bottom of her bottomless soul. She wanted to say them so badly, but this was unheard of in 1860s New England. So what Cymbelminne Rickmeister actually said, in a most humble and obedient manner, was, "Yes, Father! Yes, Mother!" The Rickmeisters, two of Montpelier's leading citizens, were not actually her parents, though they had taken very good care of her. As teenagers will be though, Bella was not always very appreciative. Orphaned at the te...

Summer and relaxation should naturally go together. After a strenuous day of sport or recreation what could be more rewarding than a soak in geothermally heated, mineral-rich, rejuvenating waters. Clean, clear, hot. You can just imagine how great this would be. Indoor or outdoor pools, options for throwing in a great night's sleep and delicious food into the mix and it's hard to resist. Add to that the beauty of not needing to drive forever to reach your destination, and you may discover that...

In early July 1896, a general election was just months away and backing our dollar with silver was in debate. In Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania more than 40 miners were killed in a cave in. United Confederate Veterans were holding their 6th annual reunion in Richmond, Virginia; the Equal Suffrage Convention was being held in Boise, Idaho; and horseracing was a big draw in Anaconda, Montana. Here in the Jefferson Valley, there were changes in businesses, people getting married, and construction on...
July 2, 1997 The Jefferson County Commissioners extended the engineering contract for construction of Whitetail Road and planned to begin road construction in the summer of 1998. The commission made the decision at its June 25 meeting in Boulder. This would enable construction of the approximately $3 million road project to begin in the summer of 1998. Plans call for paving about 1.5 miles of Whitetail Road beyond the overpass, and to chip seal another 8.5 miles north toward Boulder. Whitehall was home to Montana’s only custom manufacturer o...
