The Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department responded to the 1 AM call within five minutes but arrived to find the home of Mike Allen nearly engulfed by fire. Firefighters responded with one water truck and two fire trucks but could do little against the severe blaze. Firefighters called an ambulance to treat Allen for smoke inhalation, and Allen was further treated...

John Charles Winchester was born into it, you might say. On a cold November day in 1897 Charlie, as he became known, was the fifth son of Charles and Edith Winchester. Considering the Winchester family's military history, it came as no surprise when Charlie joined the ranks 20 years later after the situation in Europe had heated to the point where someone felt they needed to kidnap a VIP in order to get their way. However, as we're not there quite yet, let's get back to Charlie and how he grew...

Just like people, perennials need nutrition to grow and bloom optimally. This nutrition can be provided in the form of fertilization. But how and when is this best done? Basic requirements: The basic requirements of perennials are light, heat, water, and nutrition. A part of the nutrition is already present in the soil in the form of minerals; for the other part, plants depend on fertilization. Fertilize twice a year: in spring and in late summer. Extra boost: Spring fertilizing is the most...

If it’s time to jumpstart the resolutions you made at the beginning of the year, consider these five tools to make them more attainable: 1. Mix it up. Finding it hard to consume the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables? You’re not alone. Only one in 10 Americans do, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A high-quality blender can make getting your fill of these fundamental food groups easy and delicious. For example, the Ninja, one of the more notoriously powerful machines on the market, allows you to whi...

Many of you probably read Roger Siemen’s obituary in the Whitehall Ledger (Jan.12) or in the Montana Standard. Facebook has some complimentary posts that many of you will find interesting. Roger led a full life with many accomplishments. One of Roger’s accomplishments that I appreciated was the work he did from Whitehall as District Ranger of the Jefferson Ranger District, Deerlodge National Forest. Roger was district ranger for about 10 years during the 1980s. Roger said that if district rangers concentrate on three issues they can’t go wrong...

January 16, 1997 A sharply divided Whitehall Town Council with a 4-3 vote approved a water rate increase for town businesses and residents during the council meeting on January 13. The vote, which followed a lengthy and oftentimes bitter hearing and debate, helped solidify the future of the Whitehall water improvement project and moved the project a major step toward final completion. Amid allegations that the council’s actions on the water rate increase were illegal and discriminatory, and after a brief scuffle between Whitehall Town M...
When a Montana resident dies, state law provides a process for deciding who is legally entitled to inherit financial accounts the deceased had with banks, credit unions or other entities such as brokerage firms. Montana property and contract laws, and provisions under the Montana Uniform Probate Code, dictate who becomes the legal successor(s) of certain accounts. “For example, when two people have a savings account in joint tenancy with right of survivorship, the surviving joint tenant becomes the legal successor. If an owner placed a p...
The Montana Public Service Commission has opened an investigation into the adequacy of legacy telephone systems owned and operated by CenturyLink Communications, LLC, and its affiliated Montana carriers. Many rural Montanans rely on these legacy systems for phone service, including access to emergency services. The formal investigation was opened in December after the Commission received complaints from Wibaux County Commissioners and citizens who expressed concern about unreliable phone service and associated effects on public safety....

Healthy eating is on the minds of many people at the start of a new year. One roadblock to healthy eating each January is the start of the National Football League playoffs, which culminate with the big game each February. Appetizers, sandwiches, and other game-day offerings often prioritize taste over nutrition. However, by rethinking some game day staples, it's easy to put a twist on popular favorites to make them lower in calories and fat and more nutritious. This year skip the calorie-laden...
