The name Makoshika (Ma-ko’-shi-ka) is a variant spelling of a Lakota phrase meaning ‘bad land’ or ‘bad earth.’ Today, as Montana’s largest state park, the badlands of Makoshika are set aside for visitors to see and enjoy. In addition to the pine and juniper studded badland formations, the park also houses the fossil remains of such dinosaurs as Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops. A newly remodeled visitor center (with a gift shop) at the park entrance houses a Triceratops skull and other badland interpretive displays. The park includes an...
The grizzly bear. The wolf. The cougar. These magnificent creatures, apex predators, how can we not admire them? People cross the world for the opportunity to see one in the wilds of Yellowstone or Alaska. There, we view them from a distance, free to indulge our awe in safety. It has been a long time since Americans lived in fear of wild beasts. But now that fear has returned. Fear felt not just in the woods, but also in cities and towns: Paradise, California; Talent, Oregon; and now in suburban Superior and Louisville in Colorado’s Boulder C...

Thank you for sticking it out with me this first year as I write for the Whitehall Ledger. I have heard nothing but compliments and excitement for my articles. I highly appreciate all of the support! I never thought I would be writing for any paper, but I am so proud to be a part of this beautiful local paper. This new year I will be stepping up my game and better prepare myself for this amazing opportunity. I will start interviewing my four to five candidates at the end of each month for the next month. Unfortunately, this month will not...

Barbara Jo Stafford, or Barbie as she was commonly known, was an only child. The circumstances of her emergence into this world were quite miraculous; some might even say magical and mysterious. Jo Ann and Jacob, Barbie's parents, had been trying for some time to have a child, but with no luck. Having exhausted all the standard, doctor-approved means, the Staffords decided to try some rather unconventional ones. A friend of a friend of a friend told Jo Ann, over a quilt one Tuesday morning on a...

There was plenty to celebrate at the beginning of 1896 and 1922 even with winter still keeping people close to the woodstove. Whitehall was rebuilding after a series of serious fires during early 1895 and it had survived the "greatest depression ever known in the United States..." At the start of 1895, there were 20 businesses and professionals in town. At the start of 1896, that had grown to more than 32 and the Zephyr listed details on 60 new buildings in town, all built during the previous...
January 2, 1997 Area residents attended an informational meeting presenting an explanation of a proposed Extended Area Service (EAS) plan and showed nearly unanimous support for the new plan. An EAS involves expanding the local calling area to include nearby exchanges such as Butte. In Whitehall’s exchange, phone customers pay long-distance rates for calls into the Butte exchange. The EAS would come with a cost increase for all affected customers. Options under review would increase Whitehall’s rates by an amount between $2.10 to $10.19 dep...
Nearly one-third (30 percent) of U.S. home fires involving Christmas trees occur in January. With this post-holiday fire hazard in mind, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) strongly encourages everyone to keep the festive memories and remove the hazards by disposing of Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season. “As much as we all enjoy the look and feel of Christmas trees in our homes, they’re large combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreac...

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is characterized as a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons, typically tied to the start of fall and persisting into the winter months. We know that depressive disorders don’t take holidays and this time of year can be stressful. For individuals who suffer from or are at risk for depression, though, the impact of holiday stresses and pressures can be much more severe than the momentary frustrations that almost everyone experiences. Typical symptoms of SAD, sometimes referred to as winter d...
We are beginning our sixth year helping people read their Bibles cover-to-cover in one year. All you need is a Bible, a cell phone that receives text messages, and a desire to read your Bible. Here’s how it works: you phone me using the phone where you want the texts sent, and beginning January first, I will send you a text specifying what Bible passage to read that day along with points to notice in that passage. It’s free, and you can start or stop anytime you choose. Some people have started this just within the last few months, so they wil...

March 28, 1891 Part II My dearest Marie, Oh, how I miss you and Davey! The nights are the hardest for me to be away from you as I think of you constantly, so I decided to write you another letter with more news about Dave Wilson from my visit to the saloon a few days ago. As "luck" would have it, the guy that took $1.00 from me in poker (don't worry – I stopped at that point) was Jim Lowery, the owner of Lowery Boarding House across the street. I found this out after he offered to buy me a d...

Families and friends will soon be gathering to cheer on their favorite teams in the season's pinnacle match-ups. To ensure guests have enough energy to ride out the drama, hosts should provide plenty of food. Finger foods are preferential on game days because they are easy to grab and eat by hand, especially when clamoring for space in a crowd. Sliders or cheese sticks are go-to options, but for a more gourmet offering, think about crab cakes. These Best Crab Cakes Ever, as they are billed in BB...
