At 102 (103 February next) Granny Hotchkins, as everyone back home called her, not only looked really good for her exalted age; she was also, without doubt, the oldest person to ever dare The Falls in a barrel! Coming from the small mid-west township of Ludlow, Iowa, just five miles from neighboring Waukon, Granny was fairly famous in her little hometown for her herbal remedies and botanical medicines. In 1872, less than a decade after Lee officially surrendered to future president Ulysses...

It is hard to determine who created the brownie, but dessert devotees no doubt appreciate that individual's now beloved creation. Brownies are one of North America's favorite baked treats. They actually are classified as a bar cookie rather than a cake, and the dessert earned its name from the deep, brown color of its main ingredient. There have been many variations on the brownie through the years, and the lively debate whether crunchy end pieces or chewy middle slices are preferred continues....

The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office will burn slash piles during the upcoming months in Beaverhead, Lewis and Clark, and Jefferson counties, near Wise River, Clancy, Marysville, and Rader Creek. The piles will be burned when the ground is snow-covered or when the surrounding fuels are wet enough to minimize the potential for unwanted fire spread. Burning will take place only when weather conditions and forecasts allow for adequate smoke dispersion. The prescribed burns will be implemented by fire managers from the BLM. For m...
The Canyon Ferry Reservoir public comment period is now open and will continue through June 8. Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) allows federal agencies to collect and retain user fees for overnight camping, group use shelters, and special use permits. If FLREA is instituted, existing fees from users of reservoir facilities will stay at Canyon Ferry and be used exclusively for local improvements instead of returning the fees to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Reclamation’s Montana Area Office plans to initiate FLREA at C...

He knows everything there is to know about electrical fences...but that chapter of his life is coming to an end and a new one is about to begin. Larry Feight, who has been working in electric fencing since 1982 and has owned High Country Ag since 1987, has sold his business. While this sounds like he might be on the path to retirement, he won't quite admit that thus far. "I'm tired," Feight said with a laugh. "But I'm still sticking around to help train the new owner (Elliott Perfili) and keep t...
Don’t you wish you could press pause on the grieving process during the holiday season? I remember wishing I could do just that during the first (and several) holiday season following the painful loss of a loved one in my life. I recall being conflicted as there were times when I wanted to participate in the excitement and joy but simultaneously either didn’t want to participate at all or felt guilty for celebrating. That conflict still exists many years later. Grief is complicated and unique for everyone. While accepting loss becomes eas...

Josaphyna De Villiers was born on May 21, 1894, to Willem and Dominique De Villiers. Although she entered this world in these United States of America, Josaphyna was of French ancestry, with both sets of grandparents having migrated to these shores from the South of France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Her grandparents, both paternal and maternal, had kept a certain part of their heritage a secret, as they had, in a manner of speaking, been forced to leave the land of their nativity. They...
DECEMBER 19, 1996 New ownership has come to the Whitehall Ledger. Glenn Marx, an advisor to Governor Marc Racicot, and his wife Terri, officially purchased the weekly newspaper Friday, December 13, and will formally take over operations on January 1, 1997. Marx said they are looking forward to the challenges and to becoming a part of Whitehall. The couple, along with their two children (daughter Anna, 11, and son Toby, 9) are purchasing a home in Whitehall. Marx said it has been a dream of his to own a community newspaper for years. For the...

Jefferson Valley Fine Arts would like to give heartfelt thanks to those artists who exhibited their wonderful talents, making our art show another successful event for the Whitehall Christmas Stroll. None of it would be possible without your participation. To the amazing group of volunteers, I can't believe how hard you work continually year after year to make this all come together. Thank you for being the civic-minded team players you are! The art exhibit would be a distant memory without...

The dawn of a new year presents plenty of opportunities to look to the future. Resolutions are made each January, with most centering on ways to get healthy. Not all resolutions need to be of the healthy, however. Once in a while it is fine to indulge, so a resolution to entertain more or to explore new baking opportunities can spice things up in the year ahead. People aspiring to spend more time in the kitchen can celebrate winter baking and National Chocolate Cake Day (January 27)...
