A true gem of downtown Whitehall, the Star Theater has been an integral part of the community for decades. Starting this Friday the theater will be thanking its loyal base of customers with a free admission movie. The theater is also hosting a free of charge concert September 23. In October of 2016, the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation awarded five grants at a reception at the Borden's Building in Whitehall. Last week, JVCF board members were able to see the grants put to good use at a walk-through tour. The JVCF awarded five grants in 2016 for a total of $13,500. Throughout the tour, grant recipients thanked the board for their donations. An enthusiastic group met to get the Cardwell 100th Anniversary celebration plans started. The Cardwell School has been reserved for August 4, 2018 to commemorate this milestone. With the date secured, the work finding former students and getting other arrangements made, will be the big push. Other volunteers are welcome to join the work. The Cardwell School Board considered policies and budgets during the regular meeting. The stories held within the walls of the JV Museum were enhanced during the 2017 Season. Most recently a Broad Ax that had helped to build a barn at the 18 Mile in the early 1900s and once again in the 1930s helped to build a barn in Cardwell joined the many artifacts contained within this historic building. The Whitehall High School Booster Club has long been an integral part of the community, raising money for the betterment of Trojan athletics. This year, the club has decided to have a little fundraising with the "Kiss the Pig" contest taking place after the Homecoming game October 6 against Jefferson. According to club member Kami Noyes, residents can donate $1 per bet to select one of four contestants. The contestant who receives the most donations will kiss a pig at the 50-yard-line. The four... The Whitehall High School Interact Club is stepping up to help Montanans affected by this summers devastating wildfires. The club has initiated the "Change For Fires" fundraiser for families in the Treasure State. Donation jars have been set up at Jefferson Fresh Foods, The Corner Store, Pepper Tree and both Whitehall School offices. Residents at Liberty Place were recently thinking of a way to help out the community, while at the same time looking to obtain funds so they could go out for pizza and several other outings. They decided to combine both efforts at a car wash last week at the Farmstead Property near Whitehall. It was another successful year for the Whitehall Annual Softball Tournament. The event that took place in late August was able to give back to the Whitehall Food Pantry. Organizer Mikel Kelley said that heavy smoke led to the cancellation of several teams, but she had five die-hard teams that participated. On Labor Day, the small historic mining town of Mammoth rolled out its own brand of a "Rocky Mountain High" Music Festival. Nestled in the Tobacco Root Mountains, this year's festival was conceived and hosted by local residents, Dave and Marjorie Klem. Saint Teresa's Catholic Church has a new priest, Father Elias Kabuk. Father Elias happily states, "I actually am titled a Parochial Vicar." What that means is that Father Elias has been loaned to the Catholic Diocese of Helena from the Archdiocese of Kaduna, Nigeria, Africa, and the Diocese sees fit to have a local priest as the pastor. Organizers of the Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo, "A Fair of the Heart," say it was a big success and drew a large crowd. The fair and rodeo was August 24-27, at the Jefferson County Recreation Park one-half mile south of Boulder. "We are really pleased with the turnout. We were a little worried about the smoke, heat and fires, but people seemed determined to have a good time anyway. It's so much more comfortable since we put the cover on the rodeo bleachers. A grant received late last school year will be a boon for Whitehall students in the upcoming school year. According to physical education and health teacher Robyn Smith, the schools received a $250 "One Class at a Time" grant to purchase playground equipment for K-8 students. Smith said they were able to purchase such things as basketballs, footballs, jump ropes, Frisbees and various age-appropriate equipment that will get kids moving. Thanks to a generous donation from the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine, there is now power at the pavilion located at Legion Park in Downtown Whitehall. The mine donated $4,800 to pay for electrical work at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Pavilion that is owned by the Town of Whitehall. The Whitehall Council approved a request for the electrical work at a meeting July 16. Down McKeown Lane is a wonderful old house and out buildings that belong to Scott and Tracie Cornwall. Over the years, Tracie has put a foundation under the old house, done some landscaping and at present, Scott is in the process of refurbishing the barn.
