    Area residents came together last week to show support for local law enforcement at a "Back the Blue" event at Legion Park in Downtown Whitehall. Among those in attendance at the Wednesday event was Charles Shank, who discussed his respect for and what the local law enforcement means to him.     The Whitehall/Harrison High School football team could not have asked for a better start to their opening game of the season August 25 at Shepherd. Dynamic junior returner Connor Johnson took back the opening kickoff 70 yards for a score, the first of four first-half touchdowns in the impressive 28-12 road victory.     There were plenty of positives for the Whitehall High School volleyball last Saturday in Manhattan. The Lady Trojans were not only able to pick up a victory against Livingston, the young team was also able to gain valuable experience on the court. Head Coach Lauren McDonald said the team has 14 girls out for the team, but only 12 had enough practices so they were not able to sub for their varsity or junior varsity teams.   • Grant benefits K-8 students

    A grant received late last school year will be a boon for Whitehall students in the upcoming school year. According to physical education and health teacher Robyn Smith, the schools received a $250 "One Class at a Time" grant to purchase playground equipment for K-8 students. Smith said they were able to purchase such things as basketballs, footballs, jump ropes, Frisbees and various age-appropriate equipment that will get kids moving. They have given up six in the opening frame, and just 12 overall.   • Donation brings power to pavilion

    Thanks to a generous donation from the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine, there is now power at the pavilion located at Legion Park in Downtown Whitehall. The mine donated $4,800 to pay for electrical work at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Pavilion that is owned by the Town of Whitehall. The Whitehall Council approved a request for the electrical work at a meeting July 16.     There will be a new assistant coach on the sidelines for the 2017 Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. Brennan Hayes was hired over the summer to join the staff that includes head coach Dan Lacey and assistant Ed Simon.     Whitehall High School junior volleyball player Dorothy Mastel is not short on experience on the court. Mastel was able to gain valuable varsity experience as a freshman, and was a starter during the 2016 season.     During the fall of 2016, Ryan Murphy, Adrian Bright, and Madison Loomis competed their first seasons as members of the Whitehall High School Cross Country team.     The Jefferson Local Development Corporation Annual Dinner and Awards will take place Wednesday, August 30 at the Whitehall Community Center. The theme for the 2017 event is Blue Jeans, Boots & Bandanas.     At last week’s Community Transition Advisory Committee Meeting, Golden Sunlight Mine Manager Dan Banghart reported the production at the mine during July was 2,400 ounces. Banghart added from August 1 to 3 about 1,000 ounces were recovered. Banghart told committee members that the mill performed well, and while underground tonnage exceeded plans, they are still seeing lower grades than budgeted.     Last Friday was a memorable experience for David and Patti Hanley of Whitehall.
