While I certainly don't mind being outside for a hike or spending a few days camping without any technology or a care in the world, I also very much like to be sitting on the self-created divot on my couch and binge-watching a television show or a football or basketball game. Over the years, I have also really grown to love mixed martial arts and have gone to six UFC events in the past decade. Watching a fight card live is a magical experience and the energy in the arena, especially for a...

Every few months I will have a dream of a small little diner in my hometown of Rock Springs, Wyoming. After the dream, I will always wake up hungry and craving a double shamrock and fries with from Grub's Drive-In. While it may make some people giddy to dream about food, I will always wake up angry because the food in question is a bit more than a quick trip downtown or a short trip to Bozeman or Butte. I still remember the first time I ever stepped foot into the little diner that has counter...

The season came to an end last week for the Whitehall High School volleyball team. The Trojans dropped two hard-fought contests at last week's 5B District Tournament in Belgrade. Whitehall fell in their opening match to Three Forks (28-26, 14-25, 18-25, 18-25), and in a five-set heartbreaker to Manhattan in the fifth set. Head Coach Kyla Simon thought her team started well in their first match against Three Forks because they were able to run their offense and attack the ball. "Because of that,...

According to Jefferson County Election Administrator Bonnie Ramey, no one filed as a candidate or as a write-in candidate for the unexpired two-year term seats in Wards 1 and 2. She said all write-in votes will be counted for these seats for which a name...

Southwest Montana is a really wonderful place to both work and live and I'm truly blessed to call the Treasure State home. I've lived and worked all over the western United States and Montana truly is a special place. I wish I could say that about everywhere I've worked, but I can't. When I was a little bit younger, I was more than a little bit impulsive and I would get "ants in my pants" and never want to stay at the same newspaper job for too long. I wanted a new adventure and I would go on...

The Whitehall High School cross country team wrapped up their 2019 season in a positive fashion at last week's State Meet at the Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls. Head Coach Kerry Sacry was pleased with the way the team performed. "Everyone competed very well. Times were not great, but in a couple inches of snow our kids competed and took on the challenge. They ended the season on a good note," Sacry said. Dawson Powers had the top overall finish for Whitehall. The junior finished 44th...

"I was extremely proud of the team for pulling out the win on Thursday night. It was truly a team effort and these young women continue to show how tough they are, even when things don't go as planned," said head coach Kyla Simon. Two days before the game, Whitehall lost freshman...

It was an unfortunate early end to the season for the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. Trailing 20-0 with 1:29 left in the first quarter to Big Timber, the three sets of lights on the visitor's side of Trojans field shut off and moments later another set on the Whitehall side of the field would turn off. After nearly a 30-minute delay, a decision was made to cancel the game giving the Herders the win by forfeit. While Trojans head coach Dan Lacey was not happy with the way his team...

After a lengthy discussion, the Whitehall Town Council voted 3-2 last Tuesday to hire Ron Noe as a third public works employee. Council members Logan Reiff and Shawn Hoagland voted in approval of the hiring, and members Gary Housman and Katy James voted against. Mayor Mary Janacaro Hensleigh was the deciding yes vote for the approval. Council members Roy McBride and Francine Giono were absent from the meeting. Housman questioned the hire and said he thinks two employees is enough in the winter....

When I was a senior in college, I was taking classes through the University of Wyoming Extension office in my hometown and waiting tables at a local restaurant. I had a steady girlfriend, a great group of friends, was making pretty decent money and probably learning a little bit at the same time. Despite my happiness with my lot in life, I would always apply when my hometown newspaper had an opening for a reporter. I really wanted the sports opening but would also apply when anything else...

Head Coach Dan Lacey said it was huge to get points right off the bat. "We were able to score on our first drive and I really think that...

It was just about nine years ago when I first spotted "Peaches" walking near my home in Washington. I had never been a cat person in my life, but I instantly felt for him as the little kitten followed his mother. I knew in a heartbeat that the life of a stray cat would not be a good one and I wanted to give him a better home and for nearly nine years I did just that. Peaches instantly became an important part of my life as I learned the intricacies of cats. We soon were inseparable, and he would...

Two Southern B rivals will be looking to pick up their first conference win of the season Friday when the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team travels to take on Three Forks. I think the house is really well thought out to include tiny details that...

With the kids both in activities this fall there have not been many family trips to the grocery store. This is probably a good thing. For some strange reason they don't seem to like all the embarrassing things I will do to draw attention to us at the store. They are both at the age they want no part with this innocent fun at the store. As far as they are concerned in the next aisle could be a "cute boy" and it would an outrage if they heard me talking in the voice of one of my cats or doing a...

The Whitehall/Harrison High School football team will look to break out of an offensive slump when they hit the road Friday for a Southern B Conference matchup at Columbus. After starting the year in impressive fashion with two non conference wins, the Trojans (2-4, 0-3 Southern B) have now lost four straight games including a 28-0 home loss last Friday against rival Jefferson High School of Boulder. Both teams Friday would fail to capitalize on their first two drives on the game and after a blo...

The Whitehall High School and Junior High cross country teams shined at last Saturday’s Headwaters Invitational in Three Forks. In the boys varsity race, Dane Hoover and Hunter Coyle both had good races for Whitehall. Hoover was tenth with a time of 20:27 and Coyle was 14th finishing the race at 20:48...
