  • Teen gives back

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

While many kids his age are hoping for video games or a new cell phone for their birthday, this wasn't the case for 13-year-old Kaden Weber. The seventh grade student at Whitehall Middle School instead asked for something much more valuable that in turn showed the true spirit of giving. Rather than wanting presents on his December 31st birthday, Kaden asked friends and family members for money which he is donating to Reed's Rescue and Rehabilitation, a local non-profit animal service. Kaden...

  • Sheriff Doolittle: Lock your vehicles

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

With the recent temperatures dropping well be-low zero, local residents may have been letting their vehicles warm up unattended for a few minutes before leaving home. Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle said Tuesday that while this might have been something local residents could have done in the past, they should not do it anymore. • Editorial: Plenty to be thankful for in 2016

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

Last Sunday marked the first day of 2017. While I most certainly don’t have a crystal ball that will allow me to see what will happen in the New Year, I’m sure there will be plenty of great stories to tell in the Ledger courtesy of the great people of Whitehall and the surrounding areas. Looking back at 2016, I had plenty to be thankful for as the Publisher of the Whitehall Ledger. I’d like to share some of the things I’m most thankful for. It would be impossible to get everyone I’d like to into this editorial, but these are some of the thing...

  • Column: Let Harvard Fix It

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 4, 2017

A few minutes ago I was busy getting the web site ready to publish and my cell phone started going bezerk. I didn't recognize the number, so I just turned the ringer off and went back to the task at hand. This didn't stop the caller. Over and over again someone was trying to reach me from Cambridge, MA. I don't know much about Cambridge, other than it is the home of Harvard University, and I seriously doubt someone was calling to ask my advice on scholarly matters. I figured if it was important, they could just leave a message and I would respo...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Jan 4, 2017

9 passed into history as I finished reading a book, "The Insanity of God" by Nik Ripken. An easy read, very difficult content. Followers of Jesus Christ worldwide are persecuted, imprisoned and even killed. We take so much for granted. This is a quote from one of the many people that have survived the persecution. "Don't you ever give up in freedom what we would never give up in persecution---and that is our witness to the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ." In II Peter we are told to "always be ready to give an answer for the hope...

Whitehall head coach Herman Gerving said the team started off well especially on defense, but they started to make some mistakes with the ball and Twin...

Hi Folks, At our regular meeting last week we reviewed claims and met with Road Supervisor, Rory Parsons in the morning. In the afternoon we approved a subdivision amendment for the Cox Creek Minor and Clearwater Estates Subdivisions. These are southwest of Whitehall and the amendment basically consists of a boundary adjustment. We approved Resolution 40-2016 which...

John began his cowboy journey on Nov. 15, 1938, in Preston, Idaho, and from a young age - together with his partner in crime and younger brother, Darryl - perfected his penchant for mischief,...
