  • Budget defines first week of Montana Legislature

MICHAEL SIEBERT, Community News Service University of Montana School of Journalism|Jan 11, 2017

Montana's 2017 Legislature has begun to tackle a wide swath of issues, from public safety to infrastructure, from education to agriculture. But as the first of many bills were read in committee rooms around the Capitol last week, it became clear that everything this time around would focus on the budget. During a Republican caucus Tuesday, House Speaker Austin Knudsen, R-Culbertson, told fellow party members the challenges the entire Legislature faces in the coming months would be daunting. "The...

  • Editorial: Lady Trojans show plenty of promise

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

It would be safe to say the past few years have been difficult for the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team. As soon as the team took to the court to open the 2016-17 season, this changed in a heartbeat. The Lady Trojans were able to open the season with three consecutive victories, already matching their win total for the previous two seasons combined. They dropped their next two games, but showed last Thursday that the culture of Whitehall girl's basketball had changed. They shook off the two losses and came out and destroyed Manhatta...

  • Column: STOP THE PRESS!!

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

When I first started out as a reporter I always had the dream of frantically running into the printing facility and screaming, "Stop the press". I had seen this in multiple movies and television shows and it always seemed so dramatic. A few years later I would get the chance after a major error was discovered. Turns out it was not as exciting as I had pictured it. In fact, I think I just made the press crew mad and got called about every name in the book. I think half of it was the fact I came in the pressroom like a whirling dervish screaming...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Jan 11, 2017

Volunteers at the Museum are really glad to have John Joy back in the mix. Health issues kept him isolated for a few months, but along with the 7 others trying to get back into their routines, he just picked up where he had left off. The key word at a museum is DETAIL! When the barn was being developed into the Museum, Roy told us that the office wasn’t big enough -- he was so right. The files grow and work space is shared and it won’t be long before that map case will getting the attention that has been so needed. The Library is looking for...

  • Principal's Principles

    Britt McLean, Whitehall K-5 Principal|Jan 11, 2017

January is a month full of cold and winter. January also reminds us of portions of our life that may need improving or revamping (New Year’s Resolutions). It is funny how motivated we are to start something new, or continue something started because of a resolution. As I pondered what my resolution should be, I was reminded of work and what was accomplished in 2016. As a professional, my goal is to help continue making Whitehall the best elementary school it can possibly become. Our students here are the best and are also why educators c...

  • Whitehall splits Tuesday with rival Jefferson

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy’s basketball held off a scrappy Jefferson High School team in rivalry action last night in Boulder. Playing without senior leader Colton Noyes who missed the game due to sickness, the Trojans (5-1, 3-0 5B) overcame a late deficit for the 51-47 victory. Trailing by one with under a minute left, senior Braden Larsen hit a layup to put the Trojans up 48-47. It was their first score since a 9-0 run that had given Boulder their first lead of the second half. After two misses by the Panthers, Andrew Simon drilled two f...

  • Trojans topple Tigers

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School boy's basketball stayed undefeated at home with a 70-53 win last Thursday over Manhattan. The Trojans jumped out to a 20-12 lead in a first quarter that saw freshman Max Feight drain three three-point shots. Head Coach Zach McLean thought his team did a better job to start the game which has been a concern, but said he was still disappointed the team gave up a lot of good early looks on the perimeter. Both teams would score 12 points in the second quarter to keep the...

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jan 11, 2017

The Whitehall High School wrestling team was able face off against some of the best teams in the state at last week's Tom LeProwse Tournament in Bozeman. "The boys did well. It is the biggest, toughest tournament we will go to this year," coach Steve Sacry said. Leading the way for Whitehall was junior Dawson Hoerauf, who finished fifth at the tournament that Sacry said featured mostly Class AA and A Schools. Hoerauf continued his strong season with a 5-2 record. Sacry said sophomore Connor Johnson was just one match away from placing and...

"The Lady Trojans came back and played really hard against Manhattan, which is a characteristic of these Lady Trojans. Knock them down and they will get up," head coach Herman Gerving said.
