A Republican legislative candidate running for a seat in Jefferson County has been charged with a felony after allegedly falsifying his signature on a ballot for Jefferson High School Board of Trustees in order to "test the system," according to court documents filed late last month. • Koenig Awarded Department of Defense Patriot Award

    Jun 8, 2022

Whitehall School District Principal Kurtis Koenig was awarded a Department of Defense Patriot Award in recognition of the extraordinary support of his employee serving in the United Air Force Reserve Colonel Donna Loomis. Without supportive employers, the strength and readiness of the nation's Guard...

  • Dear Editor: Guns. Guns. Guns.

    GERALD JOHNSON|Jun 8, 2022

Dear Editor, Is there anybody out there…just nod if you can hear me. (P.F.) Entering Whitehall from the east “looms” a message. An affirmation of hate and barbarism. The shameful battle cry of America’s spiritually worn and morally lost. And an ominous epitaph cut into the tombstone of its victims. “Guns. Guns. Guns.” The false God of godless America. “The Gun God” is worshipped like the golden calf in the wilderness by those drunk with addiction and pathological ignorance of the truth. “Guns. Guns. Guns.” The #1 cause of death for children,...

  • Thought Provokers: 6/8/2022

    Jun 8, 2022

Kids seldom understand they are also watching their mom and dad grow up. When we sleep, our brains make up stories and then proceed to get scared by those stories. Someday there’ll be a Super Bowl ad for a brand of marijuana. People have memories of you that you don’t. The gumball industry hasn’t been affected by inflation in decades. When you’re changing a baby’s diaper, you know it’s only temporary. When you start changing an adult’s diaper, you know it’s permanent. It’s possible to go your entire life never needing to jump. Any history...

  • Local Author Endeavors to Trade a Book for Land For a Public Campsite

    THOMAS J. ELPEL, Jefferson River Chapter|Jun 8, 2022

Montana real estate prices are skyrocketing, creating additional hurdles for conservation work. Feeling the need for a new approach, local author and conservationist Thomas J. Elpel initiated a trade-up challenge to swap a book for land for a public campsite on the Jefferson River Canoe Trail in southwest Montana. "I heard about a guy who traded up a red paper clip for a house and a woman who traded up a bobby pin for a house, and I wondered if a trade-up challenge might be a good way to acquire...

  • Go Ask Jo: 6/8/2022

    Jo|Jun 8, 2022

Dear Jo, I went to a fair this weekend, the Renaissance Faire. Well, to say it was a bit of a culture shock would be an understatement. I am beginning to feel like we are a bit isolated from different cultures in our little town. I saw women and men who had the most fantastic outfits on. Some had on Viking outfits, warrior outfits, mythical creatures, and even a Little Bo Peep! It was amazing to see all the vendors, what they sold, and what they wore. I know some people think it is weird to dress up and go to these. I loved it! The people were...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: June 1922 Part I

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jun 8, 2022

June 1896 in the Jefferson Valley: Whitehall is a growing community, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the official start of summer. But rain is making the rivers rise and threatening cropland. Nationally, there are questions about election results in Oregon, a severe storm in St. Louis has left 120 people missing, our government was calling for stricter surveillance of meat being imported into the U.S., and a cannery is burned to the ground by militants in Astoria, Oregon. The local news items a...

  • Connecting Point: A Skeptic Meets the Savior

    BILL LANES|Jun 8, 2022

Our society is all too familiar with court cases. Just panning recent history, people were more interested in a possible sex scandal instead of judicial review when Clarence Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court. More than a summer consumed all the networks when OJ Simpson stood trial for murder. Recently Johnny Depp won against his ex-wife, and I don’t care. Now, seriously, as a third-generation follower of Jesus Christ, I encourage people to carefully examine the Bible. One can view it much like a court proceeding; collect the claims, e...

  • Ray C. Haberman, Jr., 89

  • Colonoscopy or End-of-Life Planning? Many Americans Would Prefer the Physical Examination

    TAYLOR LOVE, Home Instead - Bozeman|Jun 8, 2022

Many people, especially those 65 and older, postponed routine doctor appointments during the pandemic. As older adults are reconnecting with their communities, including addressing those overdue medical check-ups, aging experts are encouraging them to add another “probing” exam to their to-do list: the Elderoscopy. Rather than a physical examination, this is a discussion. An Elderoscopy is a critical conversation between older adults and their loved ones, examining wants and needs, and setting intentions for topics such as end-of-life pla...

  • National Flag Day Celebration June 14 at Whitehall Cemetery

TOM HARRINGTON, Whitehall VFD and American Legion|Jun 8, 2022

The question of what to do with a worn-out flag often arises and Section 8(k) of the Flag Code states “The flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Worn-out flags can be given to the local American Legion Post #24 or VFW Post #4603 at any time for proper disposal. There will be a flag retirement ceremony at 10:00 AM, on June 14, at the Whitehall cemetery. National Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 as a day to honor the American fla...

In addition, states with the lowest overall gun death rates have some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the nation and lower rates of gun ownership. • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Sweet Country Coleslaw

    Jun 8, 2022

Coleslaw is a staple of backyard cookouts and picnics. Coleslaw is considered a Dutch food, though there are mentions of a similar cabbage dish served in Ancient Rome. The word coleslaw is derived from the Dutch term "koolsla," meaning cabbage salad. That's not surprising, as the slaw is made primarily of shredded cabbage with a salad dressing or other condiment, usually vinaigrette or mayonnaise. Today coleslaw can be found prepackaged at supermarkets, sold by the pound behind the deli counter,...
