As the summer season begins, it might be time to bring out your lawnmowers and manage your property. Although this seems like an adult-only activity, it is important to consider your children when adjusting your routine to focus on important safety practices. If your child is over 12 years of age, they might be mature enough to take on the task themselves. We have outlined the appropriate safety measures below if you have children who are near the lawn mower or who are ready to learn how to...

Picnics are a fun way to bring people together to enjoy food and conversation. While there are no limitations to what a picnic may entail, when it comes to food, it may be best to pack items that are portable and do not require many accoutrements for eating. That is why finger foods make such great picnic fare. Fried chicken long has been a popular picnic menu item, but other chicken dishes can fill in for this staple quite easily. For example, this recipe for Sesame Chicken Fingers with Honey D...

Because of the continued cool, wet weather, we are continuing to collect the Dalmatian toadflax stem boring weevil Mencius janthiniformis. We have requests for over 70 releases and have only been able to collect 10 releases so far. We will be trying to collect more this week as the weather warms. Wish us luck! Driving back to Colorado State University with a van full of students after a day of working to heal some beat-up land north of Fort Collins, I wondered: Could ecological restoration be a new form of outdoor recreation? We’d spent the day building a sawbuck fence around a spring. From the spring, gravity would carry the water through a pipe to a stock tank in the middle of the pasture. On this land protected by a conservation easement, cows would no longer drink, pee, and poop while trampling the spring’s vegetation. The spring could rec...

State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to be aware of the risk of exposure to rabies as summer approaches. The risk for potential encounters between humans and wild animals increases during spring and summer because of the time spent hiking and engaging in other outdoor activities. This process requires hunters to keep their email address current in their ALS records. Payment of the license fee is not...
This last week I noticed a lot of small sparkly creatures flying in the air at night. I tried to capture one but had no luck. I called one of the locals who hunt bugs and he said to turn on a big LED light at night and the creatures would come towards the light. So that night I put a light on and waited an hour. I when back outside and all these sparkly creatures were sitting around the light in a circle. As I got closers it seemed like they were talking to each other and that freaked me out. So I ran up and started to stomp on them. Then I...
