Over the next three years, a Montana State University professor and his students will fly drones over wintry landscapes in Montana and Finland to measure albedo, the proportion of energy reflected from surfaces on the earth. Those field expeditions will be timed as closely as possible with the overpass of satellites taking simultaneous albedo measurements from the same locations. The drone- and satellite-derived data will then be analyzed, compared and quantified, and the results will be used to calibrate instruments on the satellites for...
NorthWestern Energy customers have reported more than 400 attempts by scammers to steal their money since Sept. 1. The criminals are calling from spoofed phone numbers with state area codes and local prefixes. Customers say the scammers threaten to disconnect service in 30 minutes unless an immediate payment is made. Energy companies will never threaten their customers. Accounts with past-due balances received multiple notices in advance of a service disconnection. NorthWestern Energy personnel report each phone number to authorities to shut...

This black-tailed prairie dog community is protected and preserved through the efforts of Montana State Parks, the Nature Conservancy, and the Montana Department of Transportation. Interpretive displays tell the story of these small, entertaining prairie dogs and their role in the prairie ecosystem. These creatures have great ecological significance because they create patches of habitat that provide prey, shelter, and forage for a diverse number of animals, including burrowing owls, black-foote...
The 2022 Youth Pheasant and Waterfowl Weekend is fast approaching, and several kick-off events are scheduled around the state. To get interested hunters and their families prepared for the youth weekend, which is September 24 and 25, these events will provide the opportunity to meet with mentors, ask questions of FWP staff, and possibly win some prizes. During the week prior to the youth weekend, FWP will release pheasants on several wildlife management areas around the state. Most of the pheasants were raised by Montana Correctional...
There are only two remaining trapper education field days left this year before trapping season for most species begins on November 1. As a reminder, to purchase a Montana resident trapping license, trappers must complete the Montana Trapper Education Course online or have purchased a trapper’s license in at least three prior years (in Montana or another state). The trapping course requires an in-person field day. The trapper education course consists of an online component, an in-person field day, and a written test. This general trapper e...

Cocktail parties feature prominently on social schedules each holiday season. Such get-togethers are convenient because the foods and beverages served are designed to be small and portable. That can save any holiday host time in the kitchen. There may be plenty of prepared foods in the grocer's freezer that can be served for gatherings, but the taste of easy, homemade offerings can mingle with the time-savers when guests arrive. Bacon-Wrapped Goat Cheese Stuffed Dates are an easily prepared...

Harriet Peregrin Smith, Hattie for short, possibly pictured here, was born to a mixed couple in Georgia. Her parents, Reginald and Darlene Smith, had been approved for a marriage license after special consideration, even though the ban against interracial marriage remained in effect at the time. One may wonder at the strings that must have been pulled. Fortunately for Hattie, the strings were pulled and thus her birth was legitimized! Hattie was possibly three-months-old when this photograph was...
The Jefferson River Watershed Council would like to inform Jefferson Valley residents that the river has reached the 280 CFS drought management flow trigger at the Twin Bridges USGS gauge. JRWC is asking for voluntary reductions in irrigation and municipal water use. Weekly meetings with water users will be coordinated by the JRWC. The goal of the voluntary reductions is to maintain a minimum flow of 50 CFS at the Waterloo USGS gauge. Additionally, FWP will evaluate the need for a mandatory fishing closure. To stay up to date on current and...

It is a medical order indicating treatment preferences for a person who has a life-threatening...

September is here and calendars are out at the front desk. Our new hours began on Tuesday, September 6th, when we will be open at 11 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This makes us open four more hours during the week so early birds come in before lunch and we can have programs earlier in the day. The calendar is packed so here are a few previews. The first of our new programs is “Stitch’n More.” We will be exploring different types of needlework and doing small projects to let everyone try different types of handcrafts from embroidery, quilt...

The September Art Exhibition at the Copper Village Museum and Art Center will feature Mack Schroer’s “Pop Car” Exhibit. “Pop Car” art is a unique art form that uses trucker log sheets as the base to draw pop-culture icons. The final project resembles comic book-like art on ledgers. Some of Schoer’s art has depicted movie and cartoon characters. For information on the artist and his “Pop Car” art, visit, http://www.macklinart.com/popcars. The exhibit will open on September 1st and runs throug...

Between the Russian invasion of Ukraine and sky-high oil and gas prices, a significant pellet fuel supply shortage is likely this winter season. Industry experts say you should plan ahead and secure your fuel now for the cold winter months. The good news is that, currently, there is plenty of supply to stock up. As Tim Portz, executive director of the Pellet Fuels Institute explains, Russia is the second largest producer of wood pellets globally, supplying more than 2 million tons to global...

Follow in the footsteps of Montana ancestors and visit the site where Lewis and Clark stayed in 1805. This park encompasses the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers the namesake of the nearby community of Three Forks. Missouri headwaters became a state park in the spring of 1947! The rich, fertile soil along with the proximity to fresh water, brought the Flathead, Bannock, and Shoshone Indians to the region and later trappers and settlers, and now this beautiful land has...
Brown trout and rainbow trout will have increased access to habitat when 12 side channels are reconnected to the Bighorn River below Yellowtail Dam. Livestock can be managed and lake habitat for largemouth bass and yellow perch can be improved when fencing is installed on Buer Pond near Scobey. These projects are two of eight that recently received funding by the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission through the Future Fisheries Improvement Program (FFIP). Approximately $240,000 in funding was approved to improve Montana fisheries. The...
Wolf and Furbearer Trapping and Hunting Regulations for the 2022-2023 season are now available online. Print versions will be available at FWP offices and other outlets in a few weeks. Hunters and trappers will notice these regulations were combined into one book this year. A couple of things to point out in the regulations include: Trapper education is required for any resident trapper who has not purchased a trapping license for three years in their lifetime (does not need to be consecutive). This does not apply to those trapping for the purp...

It is the time of the year in Montana that if you don't have a well-made home you start to see mice and rats in the house. I know this does not happen to everyone, but my house is built like a sieve, it has a lot of holes from over the years. I try hard to keep the mice out, but I always get enough to make a mice-meat pie (that is about 30-40 mice) once or twice a year. I know you are thinking, how do you get enough mice to make a pie? Why not use rats, they have so much more meat on their bones. I never eat rats, it's like eating a skunk that...

For an Irishman at the turn of the century Chicago, young Tom Thumb (Thomas O'Malley) had his work cut out for him! The dapper young fellow possibly featured in the photograph might later have become one of the most infamous inhabitants of the Windy City. However, for the purposes of this story, we'll focus instead on his earlier life in this melting pot. Thomas was a fairly recent immigrant from the Emerald Isles, having sailed into New York Harbor on January 1st, 1892, under the watchful eye...
