  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 5/28/1997

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 1, 2022

May 28, 1997 A six-member jury listened to 13 witnesses during six hours of testimony and then split the verdict in the Perry Jones trial in District Court in Boulder. The jury rendered a verdict of not guilty to the charge of resisting arrest and guilty to the charge of disorderly conduct. Both charges were misdemeanors. Judge Dennis Giulio imposed a fine of $100, a ten-day suspended jail sentence and half of the court costs. The charges stemmed from a January 3, 1997 altercation between Jones and Topper Giono, Whitehall town marshal, during a...

  • Creating Fiction From History: 6/1/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jun 1, 2022

Andree de Villiers, of Basque ancestry, was a relative newcomer to this strange new world. She had emerged into the old world of the Biscay region of France, to be exact, in the mountain village of Oloron-Sainte-Marie, on September the 13th of the year 1874. Her parents, Eneko and Amala, had passed away, respectively, when Andree was 2 and 5 years of age. Born Andree Garcia, our heroine was adopted by a fairly wealthy couple living in a quiet little chateau on the outskirts of Paris soon...

  • Cousin Cleavon's Redneck Cooking: Him a Layin' Rabbit

    COUSIN CLEAVON|Jun 1, 2022

I can hear the questions right now, "what is Himalayan Rabbit?" Well, it`s not a rabbit imported from the high mountains of Tibet, or even one covered in the $80-per-gram salt my wife said would improve the taste (but did nothing for me). It is him a layin` on the road rabbit. I found that the best rabbit I have ever had is one that has been run over many times with a car. It helps to tenderize the meat to the point it just falls off the bone, but too many semis over-tenderize them. The best Himalayan rabbit is locally sourced in Whitehall, or...

  • Op-Ed: The Importance of Water in Development

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jun 1, 2022

Imagine if you will, a lone figure trudging through a barren desert landscape with nothing but miles and miles of seemingly endless seas of sand to keep them company. Obviously, of primary importance to that person would be finding WATER and finding it FAST! The importance of water to the continuation of human life cannot be downplayed. Water is most important to all of life, from the lowliest seedling to the greatest land mammal. This is not so much a response to Rebecca Lawton’s piece from last week’s (May 25, 2022) Ledger as it is eng...

Established December 23, 1985, Clark's Lookout is set along the historic Lewis and Clark trail. On August 13, 1805, Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery found what is now Clark's Lookout State Park. • Bison - Back Where They Belong

BEN LONG, Writers on the Range|Jun 1, 2022

Early in the Covid-19 epidemic, I visited the Bison Range on the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwestern Montana. But the bison didn't get the memo about social distancing. A trio of bull bison - each a ton on the hoof - fed on bunchgrass. I watched my son's eyes grow wider as one of the bulls approached our truck, as if it might want to rub off its winter coat on the fender. Not long ago, the Bison Range visitor center would have given my family a history of the place by focusing on...

Lights on V: On Air was presented to a full house at the Star Theatre on Thursday, May 19. Liberty Place residents and guest performers presented two live radio drama shows, similar in style to A Prairie Home Companion. The first, Chrome and Steel, found Lucy traveling to Sturgis in order to get away from Liberty Palace, which turns out isn't as bad as she thought. The second, The Old Soft Shoe, found Nathan traveling to New Orleans to get away from it all. Performers brought classic songs like...

Elementary Counselor Well, we’ve come to the close of yet another fantastic year! Hopefully, your kids are armed with conflict resolution skills and emotional regulation tools that will last their whole lives…or at least through the dog days of the summer ;) Continue to use the school counseling page as needed. It is filled with tons of resources for students and parents. The one thing that I hope I’ve instilled in each kiddo this year is that I believe in them. When there are competing voices in their lives, and when they doubt their own a...

  • Something Montana Should Consider? A Water-Stressed Valley Needs to Curb Development

REBECCA LAWTON, Writers on the Range|May 25, 2022

In my drought- and fire-plagued home valley, 40 miles north of San Francisco, a debate has been simmering for decades over a massive development planned on state-owned property. The conflict is focused on nearly 1,000 acres of rural and wildland in Sonoma Valley. The prime wine-country property has been eyed for development since long before 2018 when the state transitioned its last clients from the Sonoma Developmental Center, California’s oldest hospital for the “feeble-minded.” What remains on the land are decaying historic buildings, an ac...
