  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Christmas Roast Ham

    Dec 18, 2024

Holiday hosting is a big responsibility. While nothing quite captures the essence of the holiday season like a home filled with family and friends, those doing the hosting have a lot on their plates, and a lot to put on others' plates, once guests arrive. Busy hosts can free up more time for family and friends by making a concerted effort to get out of the kitchen. Simple cooking can be just as delicious as more complex dishes, and the easier it is to prepare a meal, the more hosts can mingle...

  • COUSIN CLEAVON'S REDNECK COOKING: How To Make the Best Snowballs

    COUSIN CLEAVON|Dec 18, 2024

It is that time of year where there is snowfall every week in Montana. That means the two different types of people come or don’t go anywhere. 50% of Montana love to snowmobile, ski, and snowboard. Whereas the other half just want to stay in their house, complaining how cold it is, and that they can’t drive in snow. One of my best snow recipes is called Forbidden Snowballs. It’s one of the hardest recipes you’ll ever have to make. First you’ll need a bowl of snow. Then you’re gonna have to find the most elusive animal in Montana, the Jackalo...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Tender Gingerbread Cake

    Dec 11, 2024

Many foods are associated with Christmastime, but none are perhaps as familiar as gingerbread. Although gingerbread's slightly spicy and warming tang is often enjoyed in cookie form or baked into panels used to create gingerbread houses, the spice combination of ginger, cloves, and cinnamon can impart a delicious flavor to cakes as well. INGREDIENTS 1 cup packed muscovado sugar (dark brown works great) 1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs, room...

There's a small wooden cabin at the top of Northwest Peak, a few miles from Montana's borders with Idaho and Canada, and Chuck Manning, 79, believes lookouts like this one deserve a second chance at being useful. The fire lookout sits about 7,700 feet above sea level and seems in good condition despite being abandoned since 1955, when the Forest Service last staffed the outpost. Hunters have been tracking revisions to Block Management, hopeful that changes to the landowner reimbursement payment structure authorized by the last two Montana Legislatures can reverse flagging participation in the program and help alleviate concerns about crowding as sales of hunting licenses climb. As the last week of the...
