The Whitehall Public Works Department has been busy making improvements to the town cemetery. At the Town Council meeting last week, Public Works Director Kory Klapan reported his department has been working on the entryway into the cemetery. Nearly one month after voting down a resolution that would have terminated the buy/sell agreement for the purchase of the former ambulance barn, the Whitehall Town Council reversed its course of action at their regular meeting Monday night. Barrick Gold Corporation Vice President for Permits and Closure Patrick Malone was a special guest at the Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting last week. Malone discussed current work being done to update the closure plan for the Golden Sunlight Mine, and the legacy the company wants to leave in the area. For the second straight year, the Whitehall School Districts have received a $1,000 grant from Northwestern Energy. At a school board meeting last week, Superintendent John Sullivan said they could possibly use the money for a new press box at the school. Sullivan stated the money last year was used for the project to replace the bleachers at the football field. According to Montana Department of Health and Human Services (DPHHS), Montana closed January with widespread influenza activity. The number of Montanans reported to be infected with “the flu” increased over the past several weeks, with a high of 723 new cases last week. There will not be a winter gun show next month in Whitehall. According to event organizer Tom Harrington, the annual Winter Blast Gun Show sponsored by the Whitehall VFW and American Legion Post, and the Weapons Collectors Society of Montana has been cancelled. Harrington said the popular annual show would not take place due to insurance related issues. The popular bi-annual event brings in vendors from across Southwest Montana. A resolution to terminate the buy/sell agreement for the purchase of the Whitehall Ambulance Barn was voted down at a Town Council meeting last week. The influenza season is upon us. According to Montana Department of Health and Human Services (DPHHS), influenza is widespread right now in Montana and most of the US. Over 300 Montanans have been hospitalized this flu season and 18 deaths have been reported, most have been 65 or older. The Whitehall High School Speech and Debate team had great results at last week's Divisional Tournament in Missoula. Senior Rebecca Meyer led the way for the Trojans with a first-place finish in Impromptu. Karlie Wagner finished third in Humorous Oral Interpretation, and Issie Coleman and Bradley Morrison finished fifth in Humorous Duo. There was good news to end 2017 at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine in Whitehall. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee last week, Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus said the state has accepted their application for the proposed Apex Project, and the next step would be for Tetra Tech of Missoula to complete an Environmental Assessment. With attendance numbers increasing at the two Whitehall secondary schools, officials are looking into the possibility of eight period days. In her monthly report, Principal Hannah Nieskens reported increases at both the high school and middle school. Nieskens said there were two new students at the high school for a total of 141. Two days after a botched attempt to take an ATM at the Cardwell Store, two suspects were able to steal an ATM at an Exxon store off Interstate 15 in Idaho Falls. The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce is looking to move away from the Futurity Event at the annual Frontier Days Celebration in July. Chamber Executive Coordinator Casey Chase said at a meeting last week that it has become more difficult to work with contractors and while prices are going up for the event, attendance is not.
