    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 6, 2023

At the August meeting of the TIF Board, the Town of Whitehall requested a total of $34,000 to complete the installation of the new playground located on Legion Avenue. Public Works Kory Klapan stated that the money would be used for the installation by a certified installer, as well as lights around the playground. Klapan said the bid for installation was most likely the lowest bid they would receive. While board member Jenna McNew voiced her desire to search for other funding sources, the board voted to recommend funding the remainder of the...

  • More Updated Murals Almost Ready

    JOHN KREIS, Whitehall Chamber|Sep 6, 2023

The ongoing project of the Whitehall Murals Restoration is still alive and vibrant! This year the murals at the Rocky Mountain Bank and the Billsgary Center (K-Bar) buildings will be replaced this fall. It is expected that both murals will be replaced before the good weather ends either in late September or early October. The new murals will be very similar to the previous murals although some changes have been made to make them more historically connected to the Lewis and Clark Journals and more vibrant in color. One change from the original...

  • Dear Editor: Where is the Scam?

    RON STOLBA|Sep 6, 2023

Dear Editor, In response to Jan Lombardi's letter on August 30, 2023, in The Whitehall Ledger. I, too, had issues regarding Geocode; however, if one looks at their county tax bill, it is right there in the upper right-hand corner, fourth line. I do not know exactly what that is, but I must assume it has something to determine the property one owns. Regardless, not a big deal. I filled out the requested information, nothing of which I found invading my privacy, all included on my income tax return and included the number on the letter sent to me...

  • Thought Provokers: 9/6/2023

    Sep 6, 2023

It’s weird that Ariel doesn’t understand the concept of a fork when her dad is always carrying around a trident. People think most of Gen Z is tech-savvy but they’re really just tech dependent. As an adult, the concept of Santa is kind of sad. The older you get, the less of a deterrent a life sentence in prison becomes. Getting fat is a blast. Being fat is awful. Saying you’re better looking than most people sounds a lot more arrogant than saying you’re a 6/10, even though they’re basically saying the same thing. The person sitting behind you...

SEPTEMBER 2, 1998 A lightning-strike fire near the Jefferson River shortly before midnight on Saturday night, August 29 burned approximately 160 acres, forced a one-day closure of Lewis & Clark Caverns, and took the collective efforts of close to 150 firefighters to control. Linda Williams, information officer for the Greer Gulch Fire, said the fire started about 11:30 PM on private land, about 1.25 miles northeast of Highway 2 and the Lewis & Clark State Park Campground. Tony Nix of Whitehall...

  • Op Ed: State to Receive $65 Million Windfall

    BOB STORY, Montana Taxpayers Association|Sep 6, 2023

During the past legislative session, the Montana Taxpayers Association was excited to support the Gianforte administration's ideas that improved Montana's tax systems and provided tax relief. We look forward to continuing that working relationship. However, unless the administration decides soon on the level of the State's property tax collections, when tax bills go out this coming November the State of Montana could receive a windfall collection of 65 million dollars in ongoing property tax revenue. This windfall is in addition to the 22...

  • Between the Stacks: 9/6/2023

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Sep 6, 2023

Librarians love to snitch ideas from other libraries and share their ideas with others. I recently ended up on the St. Louis Public Library’s newsletter list;: I’m still not sure how. It gives all of the different programs they do during the week, future events, and relevant news. This fall we will be doing between 10 to 14 programs a week and having ideas from other libraries will help us vary and increase our programs so they never get stale. Coming up with different story time ideas, after school events, and adult programs always works the s...

  • Debit and Credit - Friends or Foes?

    KAREN GOFF, Certified Liability Advisor|Sep 6, 2023

You can't talk about money without talking about debt and the problems that come with it. Debt is a term that has different meanings in our world today and is a term that is often misused. What creates debt exactly? Debt is a financial position where you have made a financial obligation and the only way you have to pay for it is from money you haven't made yet. We measure our current lifestyle by monthly cash flow. What happens when you want or need to purchase something that you cannot afford...

A landowner’s streambank on the Musselshell River will be stabilized with natural materials to stop erosion while also creating fish habitat. Approximately $427,500 in funding was approved to improve M...

  • Tech Questions? Get the Answers: 9/6/2023

TIM SCHOBER, White Hat Tech Solutions|Sep 6, 2023

What is USB? USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. But let's not get caught up in the jargon. Think of it as a magic plug that helps different devices talk to each other and share information. It's like a universal translator for your gadgets! How Does USB Work? Imagine you have a USB cable. One end of it goes into your computer or a power source, and the other end goes into your device, like a phone or a printer. Now, here's the cool part: once you plug it in, a bunch of tiny wires inside the...

  • Angler Kills Grizzly Bear in Self-Defense

MORGAN E. JACOBSEN, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks|Sep 6, 2023

An angler killed a grizzly bear in self-defense this week in the Tom Miner Basin. The encounter happened on Aug. 30 on private land along Tom Miner Creek. Two anglers were walking through dense vegetation when they were charged by a grizzly bear. One of the anglers shot and killed the bear. No people were injured. The bear’s behavior was likely defensive in the surprise, close encounter. The bear was an adult male grizzly. This incident is still under investigation. Montana is bear country. Grizzly bear populations continue to become denser and...

  • There's Such a Thing as Trail Etiquette, Folks

MARJORIE SLIM WOODRUFF, Writers on the Range|Sep 6, 2023

The uppermost switchback on the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park is eight feet wide. Yet the last time I hiked out, I was stymied by a group of young hikers walking down shoulder to shoulder, tapping on their phones. Even when I said, “Ahem, excuse me,” I was unceremoniously nudged out of the way — not on the cliff side, but still. It shouldn’t need mentioning, but while walking on a rocky trail where one may fall to one’s death, it is best not to be watching one’s phone. And in case you were wondering, uphill has the right of w...

The single-person kayak with a square stern had been occupied by the male, female and a dog. The victim, identified as Abigail Richards, was found by first responders deceased and f...

  • COUSIN CLEAVON'S REDNECK COOKING: Koala Ears

    COUSIN CLEAVON|Sep 6, 2023

Still traveling around the United States. We recently went to a weird zoo, in Oklahoma. When I say weird, I mean they have a restaurant right next to the zoo that serves the animals that are in the zoo. The highest-priced item was $100,000, which is Aye-aye soup. I was so fascinated by the different items on the menu, I asked the server to talk to the cook. The cook walked out of the kitchen like someone had told him his food sucked. As he walked up to me, he looked me dead in the eye, Saying, "What is the problem this time???" I told him no...

  • Connecting Point: IMPLEMENT FORGOTTEN TOOLS

    BILL LANES|Sep 6, 2023

Have you ever used a specific tool for the wrong application? Recently, I came home and my wife, Dina, showed me all her hard work on the interior painting project. She did a fine job, but there was one caveat; I could sense it in her voice as she said, “But I need to show you something else.” After she pulled down a picture hanging on the wall there was this large hole. Apparently, she thought a crowbar was the proper tool to remove a screw. LOL. There was no sense in me scolding her since I’m guilty of utilizing improper tools as well. We ha...
