  • Here Come the Holidays: Montana Style

    MARTA VARELA, Whitehall Ledger|Nov 23, 2022

Snow is falling, the air is crisp, day by day more twinkling lights appear, and kids are trying hard to behave; all signs of Christmas drawing near. As soon as that spirit hits, there's a Santa sleigh full of events to welcome the holidays. You can stay close to home in Whitehall for the Alpaca Christmas Affair, Ranching Tradition Fiber's Country Christmas, the annual Christmas Festival, and Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park Candlelight Tours or venture farther afield for more events in...

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Nov 23, 2022

The Whitehall Sustainability Committee (WSC), with oversight from Golden Sunlight Mine, was formed in 2022 to help Golden Sunlight rank community projects in the Whitehall area by a local advisory group. In 2022 the WSC funded $135,000 worth of projects in the form of the upcoming playground on Legion Avenue and the upcoming daycare facility next to the Whitehall Schools. The project funding cycle is once again open and accepting project proposals until February 1, 2023. Think big, think the legacy of Golden Sunlight and what they hope to...

  • Dear Editor: Thanksgiving Message from Senator Daines

    SENATOR STEVE DAINES|Nov 23, 2022

Dear Editor, As a fifth-generation Montanan, I didn’t choose Montana — Montana chose me. Over 100 years ago, my great-great-grandmother homesteaded 23 miles east of Conrad, and that’s how my family made it to the Last Best Place. And I’ll be forever thankful for that. There is a lot that makes America an exceptional place to live, and the Thanksgiving tradition is one of them. It’s an integral part of our uniquely American story. For the last 400 years, we have gathered with our families, friends, and neighbors to thank God for all that He h...

  • Dear Editor: ESG

    JIM BUTERBAUGH|Nov 23, 2022

Dear Editor, A new alphabet soup set of initials has been floating around recently, ESG (Environment, Social, Governance). Simply put, this is the cooperation of the United Nations, countries, and corporations to change the world. Obviously, it is not stated that way. Environmental changes include moving to wind and solar from fossil fuels, and electric vehicles from gas. Social includes racial, gender, and economic equity, which includes diversity training for employees; and of course, gun control. Notice it is no longer about equality....

  • Thought Provokers: 11/23/2022

    Nov 23, 2022

Nuclear reactors are glorified steam engines. People only defend the hyper-wealthy because they hope to be in the same boat one day A grilled cheese cut in two triangles hits differently than one cut in two rectangles. When you travel, people seem friendlier because you are more open to conversation with strangers. The more you think about life and our society the easier it is to become depressed. The one good thing about Nintendo being 1-2 decades behind the rest of the gaming industry is that they haven’t yet filled their games with battle p...

  • Montana Decides: Congrats, Considerations, and a Clarification

    JON STONE GOFF, Montana Decides|Nov 23, 2022

Much like vote counting results in some places around the country, I am a little slow on delivery. However, local elections are officially in the rearview mirror. Approximately 58 percent of registered Jefferson County voters participated from the ten precincts within the county. The good news is that this was on par with the state, whose total turnout was just over 60 percent. Since it’s our number one responsibility as sovereign actors within our government, perhaps we should expect higher p...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago: November Part II

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Nov 23, 2022

NOVEMBER, PART II In November 1896, the elections were over, and people were able to focus on other concerns. In the West, flooding in the Coeur d'Alene area was of great concern with 100 cords of wood floating in the lake and train travel interrupted. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, Poison, Murder, and Arson Case was a headline. A well-known saloon keeper, John Mollberg, was charged with murder after putting arsenic in Moses Reeder's beer. Reeder knew who had burned down a competitor's saloon the day...

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 11/19/1997

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Nov 23, 2022

November 19, 1997 Two bags containing over $8,000 in alleged drug money confiscated during a drug raid near Whitehall were stolen from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office sometime between October 23 and October 25. During a raid on a mobile home south of Whitehall on August 6, law enforcement officers confiscated up to 300 marijuana plants, weapons and ammunition, bulletproof vests, and over $8,000 in cash. The money from the raid, along with other evidence, was secured in the county sheriff’s evidence room. The state’s Criminal Inves...

  • We Are HER Live Podcast Fundraiser December 3rd

    STEVIE CROISANT, We Are HER|Nov 23, 2022

It's no secret that mental health resources in rural Montana are few and far between. And in a small town like Whitehall, driving to Butte or Bozeman to access mental health services doesn't always seem worth the gas. That's where organizations like We Are HER can step in. We Are HER is a local nonprofit that helps survivors of abuse or assault heal after trauma. The organization is unique because it primarily provides online services to decrease barriers around access and the stigma of seeking...

  • New Book Traces Montana History's Paper Trail

    EVE BYRON, Montana Historical Society|Nov 23, 2022

Collector and historian Thomas Minckler spent a half-century gathering 19th and early 20th-century letters and documents, vintage photographs, rare books, and paintings. He's sharing those collections in his new book Montana: A Paper Trail. Veteran Western Americana specialist Nathaniel Des Marais wrote of the 10,000-plus items: "Make no mistake, this is the finest gathering of Montana source material ever brought together." • COUSIN CLEAVON'S REDNECK COOKING: The Truth About What Grandma Cooks

    COUSIN CLEAVON|Nov 23, 2022

Due to the genetics in my family, I am autistic and very OCD, which makes certain things obsessively important to me. Therefore, in the interest of truth and honesty, I feel it is my duty to expose all the supposedly innocent grandmas who serve their families “homemade” dinner on Thanksgiving. We all know that grandma loves to cook homemade pies and cookies, but does she really do it from scratch? I sent a poll around through Facebook and email to 200 people, asking about their grandma’s cooking. The first question was, how does grand...

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Nov 23, 2022

She coulda been a contender!! Ginger Woodbridge might have been the first great female boxer, but as the case may be, the little fighter, born Virginia Woodbridge on a cold Winter's day in 1919, would not see past her seventh birthday. From that cold winter's day when she entered this earthly realm, Ginger proved herself a real scrapper. After trying for many years, Robert and Janelle Woodbridge finally produced a living, breathing child; but from the beginning, they had a fight on their hands....
