I can’t believe the Summer Reading program is half over this week. With the weeks flying by, I want to remind everyone that the Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th so the staff may celebrate with their families. The Library will be open regular hours the rest of the week and all regular programs will be held at normal times. We had quite the crew in the Library a few days ago when the Rotary Club decided to hold a volunteer night at the Library. They tidied shelves, cut out name tags for programs, put DVD’s and books away, made sig...

For those who have taken a drive down Legion Avenue or been to a movie in the past several days, it would be hard not to have noticed the beautiful upgrade to the sign at the Star Theater in Whitehall. Fixing the sign is something that Star Theater Manager Colton Anderson has always wanted to do. During Fronteir Days in 2016, he had a conversation with his father in law about making it look nice and possibly even putting just a coat of paint on it. He started scraping paint off after Frontier...
Breakaway Youth Ranch is hosting a demonstration by Wild Horse Ministries at the Three Forks Rodeo Grounds, Wednesday, June 28, 2017. 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. In that short time, a colt that has never been ridden will be saddled, mounted and ridden in the arena. It is a beautiful picture of the way that God teaches us. There is no charge for this amazing evening. The wild roses are blooming! They are not only beautiful, but smell so wonderful! It reminds me that ‘high’ water should be over. The Jefferson River is down a wee bit. Claire Best had a m...
Everyone saw the wonderful picture of the Rotary Club presenting a check to the Library last week. I thought I would translate what that donation, the funding from the Friends of the Library, funding from the Whitehall School District summer program, and the $250 donation from the Black Tie Blue Jean organization will mean to the children, teens, and adults of the Whitehall/Cardwell area. The cost of the summer reading program includes craft supplies, programming fees, prizes, snacks, publicity, manuals, extra staffing, and planning hours....

The local event and Montana's only mule and donkey show featured not only halter, packers, equitation and fun gaming classes, but popular events like log pulls and chariot racing. Bridget Morse with the Whitehall Saddle Club said she...

How about the new upgrade at the Star Theater? Whether intentional or not, that beautiful gold color sure looks the WHS Trojan color. Can we expect some purple? VERY IMPORTANT - The Cardwell Post Office has new hours. The window will now be open from 7:45 am until 11:45 am. It’s still four hours, but, be alerted to the time to find Cody at the window to help. After three weekends of weddings, I noticed one more similarity between Morgan Shaw and Evan Lewton. Morgan’s wedding took place in the woods of Georgetown Lake at St. Timothy’s Chape...

Winding down through the Jefferson River Canyon is an inspiring drive. The magnificent rock formations, the river so high and mighty and the vegetation as it highlights each curve brings a 'moment' to the traveler – if they take the time to breathe it in. It had been one of those days but I was determined to make at least the last half of the Cavern Music Day at Lewis and Clark Caverns. The weather wasn't co-operating, but the covered Pavilion with a fire in the fireplace made up for that i...

The Whitehall Pool is open for business. At the Town Council meeting Monday, pool commission member Steve Atnonioli reported the opening date was Thursday, June 9, a little earlier than usual. He said they took care of some compliance issues; had some drain covers to replace, and installed an eye wash station. “We took care of the pump issues that usually show up the first couple days. We are going to be changing a few things this year, we are trying to control our labor costs and increase our revenue some, try to close that gap to make it l...

With just one hotel in town, local resident Mary Janacaro Hensleigh saw a need for more accommodations in Whitehall. She took action to remedy the issue and recently opened the First and Blue Vacation Rental. Located at 300 West First, Hensleigh described the rental as a comfortable, cozy, cottage. She said with many events in town like the upcoming Montana Mule Days, Frontier Days, auctions, class reunions and weddings at the Copper K Barn, it made sense to turn what she was using as a rental...

Not long ago, an old Butterick pattern book was donated to the Jefferson Valley Museum. Glued to the many pages were years of newspaper articles about local and international events. The following are some of those many stories from the 1930s and 40s. Headline from early 1940: “$23,368,000 Tourist Money Spent in Montana in 1939. Other States through Legislative Action Invest in This Business and Get Handsome Returns; 1940 Expected to be Record Year.” From a March, 1942 news article: Miss Marion E. Beall, daughter of F. E. Beall of Whi...

On a beautiful Montana morning, a crowd made their way to the Whitehall Cemetery for the annual Whitehall VFW Post #4603 and American Legion Post #14 Memorial Day Ceremony. Local Veteran Tom Harrington told the crowd that Memorial Day wasn’t about sales or barbecues, it has a much more important meaning. “Americans understand that freedom isn’t free and that eternal vigilance and decisive action are the price we must pay for liberty,” Harrington said. “We must always remember the ultimate...

The beginning words of a song written by Liberty Place musicians "Music takes me to a different state of mind. Makes me feel pumped, relaxed, helps me unwind." . . . . echoes the goal of the Liberty Place Musical Therapy Program. Three years ago Musical Therapist David Parker approached Liberty Place concerning a special Musical Therapy Program to which they agreed. Ann Geiger, the Executive Director, is excited about the program as she has a background in musical therapy also. This program incl...
I saw a really cute picture on Facebook. It was Kyle Glaus hanging onto a tree with his fiancé, Krista, pulling on his legs. The caption reads, “The Hunt is Over”. Their wedding plans are for later this summer. I have kidded Kyle about marrying an old, rich, widow. Krista is none of those, but she definitely is a ‘keeper’. Congratulations. Hey, Kyle, God says in Proverbs 18:22 “He who finds a wife, finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD”. The Armstrong ranch on Armstrong Road hosted its annual Armstrong picnic. The crowd includ...

Rotary Club member Erv Hedegaard said the fish will remain in the pond until after Labor Day. He added they will then drain the pond, fillet the fish and divide them up with most going...

Within these walls of one of the oldest buildings in Whitehall is held the story of the town, the valley and the people. These buildings and grounds were "rescued" by volunteers and are still lovingly maintained by volunteers. Even though the season is from Memorial Day...
