Last July, a herbicide was placed in the Jefferson Slough in an attempt to knockout Eurasian watermilfoil prior to a planned relocation of the Slough. According to Jefferson County Weed Coordinator Jill Allen, Dr. Ryan Thum of Montana State University and students from the School’s Plant Science and Plant Pathology Department did the monitoring of the application. Hi Folks, At our regular meeting last week, we held a Public Hearing and approved Resolution 34-2016 which amends our Budget. This became necessary after the Department of Revenue reached a last minute deal with Northwestern Energy to resolve some assessment issues. We requested the DOR recertify all of our values for this year. We were able to absorb most of the change by reducing some of our cash reserves. The first case of influenza in a Jefferson County resident was confirmed last week. The adult was not hospitalized but did seek medical care for the illness. Influenza (“the flu”) is a highly contagious illness that is often recognized by its sudden onset of fever, cough, body aches, and fatigue. Statewide in recent weeks much influenza activity has been reported in Missoula County, as well as some in Flathead, Gallatin, and Park counties. At their monthly meeting Monday night, the Whitehall Town Council approved a 1.5 percent late fee on utility bills. The rate recommendation was made by the Water, Sewer and Garbage Committee, and will be charged after are account are 60 days past due. The percentage is not to max 18 percent per year. After stating she felt a discussion was inappropriate, Whitehall Town Council member Francine Giono-Janik walked out of the governing body’s monthly meeting Monday night. After a solid month of production in September, Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine General Manager Dan Banghart told those in attendance at last week’s Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting in Whitehall, that the production in October was not as favorable. At the monthly school board meeting last week, Superintendent John Sullivan approached the Whitehall School Board of Trustees about the possibility of purchasing an activity bus for the districts. The 2012 approved Noxious Weed Mill Levy is due to sunset in June of 2017. According to Jefferson County Weed and Mosquito Coordinator Jill Allen, the mill levy being proposed on the November 8 ballot will be a continuation of the existing mill to maintain what is currently operating the herbicide cost-share program.
