The Town of Whitehall has cancelled the November 7 General Election for municipal officer positions. Because there is no election, five will be elected to municipal positions by acclimation. The Whitehall High School Student Council is hoping for community participation during a Homecoming contest next week. According to Council President Ryan Murphy, at a recent meeting they came up with the idea of a window decorating for local businesses. The Federal Aviation Administration and Montana Highway Patrol are investigating a plane accident that took place the afternoon of September 21 in Whitehall. According to Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle, a plane was apparently taxiing on the runway when it got away from the pilot and ran into a house at 36 S. Centurion Way. Doolittle stated no injuries were reported. Attempts to obtain information from the FAA were unsuccessful as of press time.... Full story

After having their last two meets cancelled, the Whitehall High School Cross Country team was finally able to compete for the first time in three weeks at last Saturday's Butte Invite. "The weather was great for running. Our kids were excited to compete again," head coach Kerry Sacry said. Senior Ryan Murphy was the top overall finisher for the boys team. The Trojans (5-0, 3-0 Southern B) had five different players find the end zone on their way to a 47-7 victory on the road at Three Forks. Junior gunslinger Max Feight had a huge night for Whitehall. A true gem of downtown Whitehall, the Star Theater has been an integral part of the community for decades. Starting this Friday the theater will be thanking its loyal base of customers with a free admission movie. The theater is also hosting a free of charge concert September 23. In October of 2016, the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation awarded five grants at a reception at the Borden's Building in Whitehall. Last week, JVCF board members were able to see the grants put to good use at a walk-through tour. The JVCF awarded five grants in 2016 for a total of $13,500. Throughout the tour, grant recipients thanked the board for their donations. Officials at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine are pleased with the current progress of underground operations at the site. At the Community Transition Advisory Meeting last week, Mine General Manager Dan Banghart reported the production in August was 3,300 ounces, they have already completed a four-day mill run in September -- with an eight-day run scheduled this week. “The underground continues to do quite well,” Banghart said. It was a cold, windy, rainy and muddy night September 15 at Trojans Field. While the conditions may not have been ideal for a Whitehall/Harrison offense that had averaged 41 points in their first three games, it was a perfect opportunity for the Trojans defense to once again show they are one of the elite defensive units in Montana. The Whitehall Town Council is looking for proposals on what to do with the Ambulance Barn located at 207 West Legion. At their regular meeting Monday night, the Council approved to advertise requests for proposals on the space that was most recently used by the Community Beacon of Hope Inc. Ambulance Service. The Whitehall High School Booster Club has long been an integral part of the community, raising money for the betterment of Trojan athletics. This year, the club has decided to have a little fundraising with the "Kiss the Pig" contest taking place after the Homecoming game October 6 against Jefferson. The club has initiated the "Change For Fires" fundraiser for families in the Treasure State. The past few months have been devastating for Montana as wildfires have burned throughout the state. There was over a 2,700-acre fire locally, and over a million acres have burned in Montana. People are losing their homes, firefighters have lost their lives, and there are a variety of health related issues for both residents and animals. Simply put, it is a horrible situation. In an effort to raise money to upgrade their building at 501 N. Whitehall St., the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce is conducting a Gun Raffle.
