Because of the continued cool, wet weather, we are continuing to collect the Dalmatian toadflax stem boring weevil Mencius janthiniformis. We have requests for over 70 releases and have only been able to collect 10 releases so far. We will be trying to collect more this week as the weather warms. Wish us luck! It is very heartening to see how much damage these skinny little black weevils are doing to Dalmatian toadflax along the I-90 corridor in the Missoula area and along the 1-15 corridor betw...
Driving back to Colorado State University with a van full of students after a day of working to heal some beat-up land north of Fort Collins, I wondered: Could ecological restoration be a new form of outdoor recreation? We’d spent the day building a sawbuck fence around a spring. From the spring, gravity would carry the water through a pipe to a stock tank in the middle of the pasture. On this land protected by a conservation easement, cows would no longer drink, pee, and poop while trampling the spring’s vegetation. The spring could rec...

State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to be aware of the risk of exposure to rabies as summer approaches. The risk for potential encounters between humans and wild animals increases during spring and summer because of the time spent hiking and engaging in other outdoor activities. On June 13, 2023, DPHHS received the first report of a rabid animal this year. A striped skunk in Powder River County tested positive for rabies. In 2022, 13 animals submitted for rabies...

Hunters who will not be able to use their license this season have the opportunity to donate that license. Residents and nonresidents can donate their hunting license to a disabled military veteran or disabled active-duty service member who is working with an organization that uses hunting as part of the rehabilitation process. The license donor program began in 2013, and each year between 40 and 60 hunters donate their licenses. Reasons vary, but according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks...
Hunters can sign up for leftover licenses and permits that were not distributed by the drawing through MyFWP on the FWP website. The resulting Surplus License List will be randomized with hunters at the top of the list contacted via email with instructions to finalize their purchase within a specified time. To be placed on the Surplus License List, resident, and nonresident hunters can sign up through the MyFWP portal. This process requires hunters to keep their email address current in their ALS records. Payment of the license fee is not...
This last week I noticed a lot of small sparkly creatures flying in the air at night. I tried to capture one but had no luck. I called one of the locals who hunt bugs and he said to turn on a big LED light at night and the creatures would come towards the light. So that night I put a light on and waited an hour. I when back outside and all these sparkly creatures were sitting around the light in a circle. As I got closers it seemed like they were talking to each other and that freaked me out. So I ran up and started to stomp on them. Then I...

JUNE 17, 1998 The Jefferson County Economic Task Force is history. It was replaced by a newer, bolder, stronger - and riskier - entity called the Jefferson Local Development Corporation. At its June 11 meeting in Montana City, the 14-member task force voted unanimously to create the Jefferson Local Development Corporation (LDC). The LDC will have much more autonomy, more flexibility, and more responsibility than the task force. The task force, established in 1995 through the passage of a resolution by the Jefferson County Commission, was...

The crew is having a hard time finding many Dalmatian toadflax stem-boring weevils so far this spring. We have had good collections in the Missoula and Clinton areas for the past several years. This year we went there on June 14th to collect and the cool wet, windy weather plus the site crashing made it hard to find many weevils. The site "crashing" means that many of the weeds have been killed by the bioagent so because of a lack of food, there are not many insects left to collect. This is...

When I was leading groups into the Wyoming wilderness in the 1990s, once we left a trailhead we were on our own. If somebody got hurt, we could walk or carry the injured person out or send runners to the road to call for support. In the case of a life- or limb-threatening emergency, we could use a transponder to try to send a coded message to a passing aircraft, pleading for help. Things have definitely changed. “People expect to be rescued,” said Tod Schimelfenig, who has been on the search and rescue team for Fremont County, Wyoming, sin...
New emergency fishing regulations are in place for the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Ruby rivers. The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted the new regulations during its June 8 meeting. These restrictions limit angling during the brown trout spawning season and harvest in some stretches of the rivers. Trout abundances in several areas of the three rivers have steadily declined since 2011 and are at or near historical lows. Meanwhile, fishing pressure in these areas has increased. The emergency fishing regulations aim to be responsive to...
This is a series of articles focusing on estate and legacy planning. Authors are Kaleena Miller, Madison-Jefferson County Extension Agent, kaleena.miller1@montana.edu, and Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist, marsha.goetting@montana.edu. An important goal for Montana farm/ranch family enterprises is to transfer land and business to the next generation. “The process is challenging because it includes a complex web of economic, legal, and family decisions,” says Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics Spe...

People naturally think burgers and hot dogs when they envision grilled foods. But there is so much more that can be cooked over an open fire, including desserts and even pizza. Grilling lends a distinctive smoky taste to both the crust and the toppings. Grilled pizzas start with a basic dough that cooks up quickly, and then can be customized with many different flavor profiles. This recipe makes two 12-inch crusts INGREDIENTS 3/4 cup warm water 1 package active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)...

JUNE, PART I All was not quiet in Montana back in June of 1897. A sheepherder had been killed by a group of renegade Cheyenne and seven more deaths followed. Ranchers were arming themselves and fear was rampant in eastern Montana. In western Montana, bets were being placed at the racetrack in Anaconda where nearly 150 horses were listed. In the eastern United States, new appointments were being made for federal government offices; a Christian mission in China was attacked and all were feared...
