As we enter spring and the typical snowpack peak season, the water supply outlook is currently good across most of Montana. That can be attributed to consistent and mostly above-normal precipitation this water year. “March precipitation continued the trend of exceptional moisture received this year on the east side of the Continental Divide,” said Eric Larson, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Water Supply Specialist. East of the divide, March precipitation ranged from about 100% of normal in the Bighorn Mountains to nea...
Everyone believes jellybeans come from the Easter bunny, and it is true. But did you know you can make your own bootleg jellybeans with an army of albino rabbits? The Easter bunny is like a bee. The bunny eats flowers and then regurgitates balls of pure sugar AKA jellybeans. The Easter bunny, when traveling, will eat all the flowers it can find. The natural sugar in the flowers helps them make their journey across the world. This is also why we do not see many flowers in March and the first part of April. Because the Easter bunny only comes...

April, Part I By April 1897, people in our Jefferson Valley were ready for spring. It had been a long snowy winter. Around the USA and the world, the weather was just one concern. Politics, war, and natural disasters were making headlines. The war in Cuba was still raging, and the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. was debating a tariff on gelatine glue and on unrefined bauxite. A massive break in a Mississippi levee required 10,000 men to try to keep the situation from getting any...
APRIL 8, 1998 Dean Hunt, a rancher south of Whitehall, and Joan Jones, former owner of the Whitehall A&W, won the two open spots on the Whitehall Board of Trustees during the April 7 school election. Hunt garnered the most votes with 223, followed by Jones with 208. A total of 457 votes were cast, 41 percent more than the 270 votes cast in 1997. Actual fraud and game rigging have been ruled out, but the investigation into the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department’s 1997 Casino Night fundraiser has been referred back to the Montana Attorney G...

As the change was added and dollar bills were subtracted from the amounts raised during the PTSA Money Wars, lots of math was to be had to find a winner! The Kindergarteners brought in $207.33 in change and were sabotaged with $130 in dollars = giving them an overall first-place total of $77.33! This garners not only first-place honors but also an extra recess and a pizza party! Their raised change funds ($207.33) will be matched by the Whitehall Ledger, Treasure State Truck Repair, and Pulse...

Nursing has been an important part of my adult life. I have enjoyed and learned from many different work environments during my years as a nurse. When I moved from private-sector nursing to public health nursing eight years ago, a new learning curve began. I soon discovered my patient was no longer one individual, it was a community. That community could be the size of a family or the size of a county. Caring for an entire community required a broader view of health and healing. In the medical field, diseases and injuries are treated one...
Jefferson Valley Fine Arts is pleased to announce two local artists who are being featured at the Whitehall Town Hall. Jean Fastenow of Waterloo has some beautiful watercolor pieces on display. Jean is a retired nurse and has resided in Waterloo for 11 years. She spent a short time taking lessons after retirement but is mainly self-taught. She has such a soft touch with watercolor, and her landscape paintings often bring a calmness to the viewer. She is an avid exhibitor in our local JVFA art shows and participates in the Painters in the...
