What a wonderful Frontier Days! Thank you to everyone who made it possible. At the Library, the book sale was going full force as people were hauling out bags full of books for a dollar a bag. Thank you, Friends, for manning the sale while staff was busy with 40 little ones at Read & Feed. By the time you read this the Summer Reading program will have ended at the Library, but I wanted everyone to know that we are still honoring reading sheets which may be turned in through August 20. There are...
JULY 25, 1996 It’s time to kick up your heels and swing into the fun of Whitehall’s Frontier Days. The biggest weekend of Whitehall’s summer gets underway Friday, and there will be events galore throughout the weekend. From the Friday crafts fair and trade show to the Sunday rodeo, the weekend will be jam-packed with activities, most of them free and all of them inexpensive. Whitehall’s senior citizens may have finished growing up, but they are having growing pains, anyway. When the Whitehall Senior Citizens Center was purchased in 1974, t...

The following is taken as written from late July 1895 editions of the Whitehall Zephyr. 19th Century Montana was different in many ways, yet today in some ways, we are not much different than back then. The papers had articles that editorialized the following: a distorted report of a mineral find in the Golden Valley 10 miles southwest of town; the new $1.00 tax on business as reported by the Yellowstone Journal which said in part, "One of the most aggravating features of the new license law is...

Elizabeth was a gentle young woman who lived in town. She took care of her aging father who had run the bank for thirty years. He had lost function in both his legs and now Henry was bound to his wheelchair in the house. He had been a kind man and now he sat lonely, counting money into different piles like he used to do. Elizabeth had spent these past few years dedicated to taking care of her father. She used to go out around town and socialize with all the women. She was content to take care...

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park will host a free talk entitled “Owl Pellet Investigation” on Friday, July 30, at 8 p.m. in the park’s campground amphitheater. What’s in that “poo?” While pellets aren’t actually scat, they do tell scientists what critters an owl has been munching on. Join Britney Gitch with the Montana Outdoor Science School to dissect an owl pellet and try to put the skeleton back together. This is the 10th presentation in Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park’s annual Friday Summer Speakers Series, which introduces a new speaker e...
Hikers are flooding our public lands, so I ask the question: Why can’t people just leave the poor rocks alone? They stack them into monoliths, paint them, write rude words on them. Who looks at a magnificent 350-million-year-old rock and thinks: “That rock needs a makeover!” First point: graffiti is deplorable. I do not want to see your name, your significant other’s name, an ode to your deceased wife (not making this up), or drawings of male genitalia. As for rock stacks, rock cairns were designed to guide the hiker along a sketchy trail....

Pasta recipes are versatile and can quickly feed a crowd when increased accordingly. Another benefit to pasta is it often is a safe bet when hosting a dinner party that includes people who follow vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. Furthermore, with the abundance of "alternative" pastas available, even individuals who must go gluten-free can indulge without worry. Fresh greens paired with pasta deliver an abundance of nutrients to the meal. This recipe for "Penne With Seasonal Greens" from "The...

This has been such a week of giving to the Whitehall Community Library! It started out with Roger Steerman and Jarrin Cheuvront framing the outside space for our new bench. Then 4 Rivers Concrete Products donated the concrete and delivered it last Friday. We had quite the work crew as they smoothed the surface in preparation for the bench and set up protective fencing for it to dry. This week the bench is scheduled to be secured to the concrete and ready to enjoy. Thank you so much to everyone...
