Some weeks are slower than others- unless, of course, you are on Facebook. Activities at the school during April will include a Garage Sale on April 29th and 30th. Details will be advertised soon. They will welcome donations. Arrangements can be made by calling 406-498-5205. Mrs. Moser is the teacher to contact. Montana Outdoor Science School starts next week and will run for several weeks. This provides the students with exceptional science opportunities. Plans are being made by the Cardwell Community Church for the annual Easter Sunrise...

  • Museum purchases flat file cabinets

In October, the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation generously granted a $4,000 gift to the Jefferson Valley Museum. Archival safe flat file cabinets were purchased with the money. While it has taken this long for them to arrive, the delivery was an exciting day. Ron Hunt and Jerry Fleege rounded up a crew. After the delivery truck unloaded them at the Jardine Memorial Building, the packing had to be removed, the drawers removed and then several men carried each section out to the dolly that...

This has been a quiet week. According to the Daily Bread reading for the first day of Spring, Jesus said to his disciples in Mark 6:31, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Sounds pretty nice to me, especially if it means a drive up the South Boulder. Kathy Clark, Aileen Shaw and Erv Hedegaard were guests with the Whitehall Pinochle Club. Host, Michael Clark gave prizes to Florence Weyer for High; Gladys Ballard for Second - she also had 1,000 aces; Low went to Joyce Held and Pinochle to Mary Gustin. Randy and Lau...

Crossing the Jefferson River on Highway 359 to the left is what I like to call ‘the hundred acre woods’. Winnie the Pooh isn’t around, but the trees scarred from a fire a few years ago, make the area captivating with imagination. With Spring approaching some of the trees will be turning green and the foliage on the floor of woods will come to life. The herons will build their nests in the tops of the trees that are suitable. The adventuresome child inside of me would like to investigate the woods and find a special hiding place. March Madne...

Recently, a picture of the 1930 Cardwell High School football team was posted for sale on e-bay. Naturally, that intrigued me, so with the help of Roy Millegan’s compiling of information from years and years of newspapers, I located some fascinating stories. Football was first played at Cardwell according to what I found, in1929, but no records of the games, etc. There didn’t seem to be a name for the High School team. Scores were crazy. One was Cardwell 115 to 0 over Twin Bridiges! Whitehall often beat Cardwell, and Cardwell won a few. I wou...

Just returned from the LOVE INC. (Love in the Name of Christ) informational and thank you meeting in Whitehall. This isn’t just another welfare program - it’s helping people transform their lives. Without a doubt, Christ will be the center of this ministry, but the value to those who need help will be life-changing. Volunteers will discover the changes in their own lives, as well. From this meeting some of the information included the variety of ‘needs’ that can be addressed. Tutoring, finances, mechanical help, household help, etc. etc. are ju...

It’s interesting that there is four of each day of the week this February. Don’t believe that it only happens every 823 years or whatever. And don’t fall for the line that if you send it on to x number of people you will receive lots of money. It’s nice to have someone to check this sort of thing out for me. Last week I told you that Savannah Rossiter would not be returning to Cardwell for the 2017-2018 school year. Well, Patti Hanley has chosen to not renew her teaching position as third and fourth grade teacher, as well. Both of these l...

Friday was a perfect day for skiing at Great Divide North of Helena. All of the students of the school boarded the school buses and made it a day of fun in the sun. Extras tagged along, too. Nice it was Friday. They could sleep in on Saturday. Trish Reiss headed up the planning and decorating crew for the Valentine Dinner at the Cardwell Church. Red Apron Catering served prime rib (it was delicious!), along with baked potatoes, etc. Cindy Brennan and her helper always prepare a great tasting meal. Games to keep the crowd busy as the food line...

Not much happening this week. The school kids did make their ski trip to Great Divide last Thursday. The blizzard conditions didn’t deter them at all. They held the Spelling Bee which you can read about in this paper in its own article. The Jr. High Honor Roll was announced by teacher, Michael Coombe. A Honor students were Wyatt Biggers and Katie Whitehurst. On the B Roll were Avery Coombe, Marta Nelson, Anna Nelson and Annie Engler. Continuing research on the Cardwell School history only adds to my curiosity. Mr. Puckett was Principal, C...

A couple of weeks ago, Donna Clark’s daughter, Shelley, passed away quite suddenly. When seeking to have the obituary published in the Montana Standard we discovered that depending on the day of the week, the cost would vary. For instance, instead of $79.00 ($89.00 with a photo), it was going to $108.00 for just the obituary!! We understood that that price included the photo, (which was sent but never received). However, to have a photo along with the obit, it would be $119.00! The letter to the editor of the Standard was never published, e...

First off: It was Senator Tester that called Rebecca Joy to congratulate her on her appointment to the Air Force Academy. Senator Daines did also. Zinke had interviewed her, but was unable to communicate with her about the appointment. At any rate, she had the approval of all of Montana’s Congressional representatives. The Trojan Wrestlers have had some shirts designed and made for themselves and fans alike. If you would like to purchase one, get a hold of Michelle Johnson at 490-2861. Renee Webster hosted and Erv Hedegaard was a guest at t...

Powells hosted a houseful of well-wishers in honor of Nolan Murphy’s 70th birthday! No one would believe that Nolan has lived that many years. Today, his cattle herd is limited and his dry land farm stills lies in Millegan Canyon and Shoddy Springs areas. Nolan still loves to watch basketball and spends a good deal of time with Breakaway Youth Ranch where he serves on the Board of Directors. He has been the treasurer of the Cardwell Community Church for 30+ years. Rebecca Joy received confirmation of her dream when she was called by Senator Dai...

Volunteers at the Museum are really glad to have John Joy back in the mix. Health issues kept him isolated for a few months, but along with the 7 others trying to get back into their routines, he just picked up where he had left off. The key word at a museum is DETAIL! When the barn was being developed into the Museum, Roy told us that the office wasn’t big enough -- he was so right. The files grow and work space is shared and it won’t be long before that map case will getting the attention that has been so needed. The Library is looking for...

9 passed into history as I finished reading a book, "The Insanity of God" by Nik Ripken. An easy read, very difficult content. Followers of Jesus Christ worldwide are persecuted, imprisoned and even killed. We take so much for granted. This is a quote from one of the many people that have survived the persecution. "Don't you ever give up in freedom what we would never give up in persecution---and that is our witness to the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ." In II Peter we are told to "always be ready to give an answer for the hope...

No one had to dream of a white Christmas! The white fluffy stuff (called snow) was beautiful but created a variety of situations - cattle feeding, highway hazards. On the other hand, it provided the perfect setting for skis and sleds. In Job 38:22, God asked Job if he had “entered the treasures of the snow”? That’s interesting. Also, there is nothing whiter than snow. Check it out. LilyAnna Howell turned four and celebrated at home with family and friends. The kids destroyed the pinata and enjoyed the filling. She also was the guest of honor...

A year ago Ken and Linda Glaus had their cattle the victims of an out of control semi truck whose driver didn't pay attention to the flagman and was not able to stop soon enough. That situation could have been so much worse - loss of human life. Moving livestock on Montana highways is not uncommon. The five mile trip from the Carmody ranch to bring the cattle home is usually uneventful. Prayer for this time was offered up and even in a heavy snow storm, the cattle arrived home safely. A wonderful Christmas blessing. Last year, Bill and Rhoda...

Just think, next week at this time it will be the winter solstice. The days will start getting longer! I know it will be cold, but it just means that God is preparing for Spring. And did you notice that ever faithful moon? Every thing is precise and in order and dependable. Whose in charge of that? The Lady Cougars at Cardwell had great success at the Sheridan Tourney. They won 3 out of 4 games. After four games and a lot of hard work, the girls were pretty tired! This will be the last week for...

Last Thursday, the school students made their annual shopping trip for a special child in the Whitehall area. The Cougars hosted Harrison at 4pm that afternoon. Coach Rossiter said that they played 4 on 4 since Harrison’s enrollment has limited girls for basketball. Cardwell posted a win while using their skills conquering the zone defense. Team work and hard work helped with the win for the Cougars. The Christmas Concert at the school is scheduled for December 21st. Hooray!, that’s the first day of winter. That means that the days will sta...

Thanksgiving begins the Holy Days Celebrations. Among the many dinners, etc., the annual Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the staff and students (and some Moms) of the Cardwell School, triggers the festivities for many. Donations to the Food Bank were abundant, but the elaborate menu awaiting the senior citizens was tantalizing. There’s always mac and cheese, something that for some reason just doesn’t fit the turkey and the trimmings. The dessert table was laden with an amazing variety of mouth watering items. Among them was Tara Tebay’s famou...

Top of the list this week is November 8th. It was not only historic to the news media, but Cassidi Shaw finished her Cosmetology Schooling, voted in her first presidential election and best of all, Lane Brush proposed and she said ‘Yes’!!. Cassidi is already employed in Bozeman where Lane is a student at MSU and will continue his studies. The first quarter of the school year has ended and the honor roll has been announced. In the 5th and 6th grades Samantha Clay, Blake Ritz, Levi Whitehurst, Shawn Huss and Cyrus Tebay are on the ‘A’ Roll. Wesle...

Glenn: You are not only clever, but sneaky! Those Trojans have been amazing and to think you would include the Yankees in the same column. Paul’s brother, Shane, watched the Ronan game and his comment was that the 1978 Trojan team couldn’t touch them and they were pretty good but not comparable to the 2016 team. With Sacry and Joy genes, Rebekah (Bekah) Joy took those genes and added dedication and hard work and became the most valuable player for the Missoula Sentinel Spartans soccer team. Bekah held the position of goalie and accomplished som...

The report from the Cardwell School tells us that the Student Council organized a great Halloween Carnival. Mrs Savannah Rossiter, teacher of the 1st and 2nd grades said, “I set out a bunch of decorations and art supplies and said ‘go ahead’! All of the decorating and setting up was up to them and it came together nicely. I was very pleased and impressed with all of the Student Council members. They worked hard, worked together and had great ideas throughout all of the planning stages. This group of kids are a bunch of go-getters; they are v...

The FM radio station that provides emergency information also broadcasts Trojan sports when on the road. The Cut Bank vs Whitehall play off game was stream lined through the computer as well as the radio and was an exciting listen. Levi Simon and Cody Haggerty were behind the microphones keeping home bound fans informed of what was going on on the field. It became a nail biter going into overtime! A big thanks to Lee Good for the system that gives not only entertainment, but emergency warnings, etc. If you like country/western music, that is al...

This is Red Ribbon Week at the school. Each day stresses a different theme. Monday was: Drugs are Ridiculous and students were wearing crazy, funny outfits. Tuesday was: Voting for my Future and the kids wore red, white, and blue. Wednesday, Turn your Back on Drugs, day had the students wearing their clothes backwards. Thursday is “Booze is a Snooze” and the kids got to wear their pajamas. Throughout the week poem, picture and poster contests were held as well as, relay races/obstacle courses, a drug awareness video and the school premises was...

Here’s a P.S. to the congratulations for Kaitlyn Lamb. Her other grandmother, Fray Patacini, along with two aunts and one little cousin, were very proud of Kaitlyn and were present at her swearing in ceremony in Helena. Winners at the Pinochle Club were awarded prizes by hostess, Joyce Held. Guests Erv Hedegaard and Aileen Shaw won High and Second respectfully. Martha Hanson won Low and Pinochle. Gladys Ballard will hostess next time. Four Thousand miles later, Jim and Lois Frazer were glad to get home. On their ‘bucket list’ was riding their...
