Dr. Doug Melzer usually works nights in the emergency room at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He spends most of his time dealing with the usual emergency room fare: heart attacks, pneumonia, broken hips. But about once a week he treats patients coming into the emergency room because they're psychotic from taking too much methamphetamine. These patients are terrified. Their hearts are beating fast. Usually they're hallucinating. When they come into the ER security guards meet them at the door....
It was just a week ago that Lydia’s was the scene of a very surprised Janet Shaw Powley when her family had arranged dinner for many friends and relatives. After tears of gratitude and hugs from her four kids and their spouses, she seemed delighted with the celebration. Even the sign advertising Lydia’s was blinking ‘Happy 80th Birthday, Janet’. A very diverse menu was offered to the guests with the Powley children and their spouses picking up the tab. Lydia’s long time tradition continues. Spaghetti, raviolis, salami, cheese, sweet potato sa...
Thank you to the Star Theater for the wonderful donation of $400 to the Friends of the Library! I promise we will put the funds to good use on one of the many projects that are still in the planning stage! Summer reading is done for the year. It was great to watch 148 readers log 100,130 minutes for the eight weeks. Patrons from toddlers to seniors read their favorite books, magazines, and electronic readers to earn three levels of prizes. Great job to all! As the staff begins to move toward fall (yes already!), computer classes are open for...

He is now sharing his experience with a younger generation in the recently published book "The Turtle Trial". The book, with illustrations by local artist Michael R. Harding, tells the story of Reishus, his brothers Mike and Johnny, and cousins Oliver, Dickie, and Tim. The book describes the boys going to a fishing hole where Randy is bitten. The boys then come together to...

Pat Watson Parker recently passed away and she was one of many 100’s of descendants of Granny. There are games and music and food, vendors and parades, fine arts and rods. To top it off, there are class reunions. This is a time for old friends to get...

Since 1949 Indiana University has maintained a geological station in the Tobacco Root Mountains because of the diverse geological setting found in Montana. The current Director is Bruce Douglas who has a PHD in Geology, has taught in this area for 31 years – 25 of which as the Academic Director and the last 3 years as the Director. He is quick to point out that it is because of the generosity of the local ranchers in allowing the students access onto their land that this program is so s...
This little tidbit is for Patti Hanley and Sally Kreis, both retired teachers from Cardwell School. They LOVE the MSU Bobcats. Five former Bobcats, Deonte, Matt, Tanner, Joe and Caleb and Rick - do those names sound familiar?- are serving the Lord in Bozeman and Great Falls. Four of them were part of the Conference that I attended in Bozeman at Grace Bible Church. When they were Bobcats, the team beat the Griz in Missoula! I Timothy 4:12 is a great testimony of their lives. “Let no man despise your youth, but an example to the believers in w...

The sun had just begun its orb illuminating 'Nature's Tapestry.' From the muted blue of the mountains, to the yellow, gold and green of the rolling fields, to the variegated greens of the trees, to a silver accent of the irrigation lines to a shining blue thread winding through the picture which was capped by the clear blue of the sky above only dotted with the back silhouettes of a gaggle of Canadian Snow Geese on their flight, this magnificent Montana tapestry surrounded the seeker as they...
This week is the last week of our summer programming. We finished summer reading with a “Build Your Own Sundae” and final store. It was a great program and we had almost 140 readers. All children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult as the staff will be assisting many children at the same time. This is a drop-in time so children may enjoy all...

She is now hoping to share her story by bringing fiber artistry back to the roots of fiber at this weekend's Copper K Fiber Festival. The event will take place July 22 and 23 at the Copper K Barn located at 830 Point of Rocks Road in Whitehall, and is sponsored by Noyes of Ranching...

Judge Alan Williams slammed down his gavel and admonished the prisoner to "Stay out of trouble in this town!" The prisoner had been arrested on Bannack's Main Street when he was recognized as a claim jumper. The Judge had several options – whipping – hanging – or, perhaps, the remittance of a gold piece. Finally the wife agreed and turned over the gold coin and the man went free and the court was dismissed. Since 1976, the registered historic landmark known as Bannack, has celebrated its 'wild...
July 4th is a special day for many reasons, not the least of which is Karen and Kerry Sacry’s wedding anniversary and Dr. Steve Sacry’s birthday. It has become an annual event to have the Sacry clan get together on that day to celebrate family. This year was no different. Seventy-plus family and friends gathered at the ranch near Cardwell for several days of fun. They floated the Madison twice!, enjoyed the Bozeman Hot Springs and had a talent show. (If you know anything about the Sacrys, you know they can entertain.) Brand Sacry was in cha...

According to BTBJ Committee Member Jill Dove, roughly $19,880 will go to the Whitehall Chamber for events like Frontier Days, the Futurity, and the Christmas Stroll. She said roughly $3,500 will go to the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation. Dove...
Cover crop cocktails are relatively new to the Jefferson Valley. You can use them to simultaneously create feed and increase the health of your soil. Cover crops use a diverse blend of species to increase organic matter, nitrogen, water infiltration and storage in our soils. They also can generate a large volume of quality forage that can be used as silage or grazed off. During a field walk on Friday, July 28, Kate Vogel of North Forty Ag will discuss how to identify areas of resource concern, set goals, and then select multiple cover crop...
