  • Whitehall Chamber receives grant from state of Montana

    The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce recently received huge news when they were informed of a grant from the state of Montana. The chamber will receive a $5,720.50 grant from the Office of Tourism and Business Development. According to former Chamber Executive Coordinator Casey Chase, the money will be used for a serious renovation of the Chamber lot located at 501 N Whitehall St. In the grant application completed by Treasurer Jill Dove, the Chamber discussed the need to enhance the current facility and access to visitor information....

    Going into last week, the Whitehall High School boys basketball team knew they would face a daunting task with road matchups at Anaconda and Jefferson High School. The Trojans met the challenge head on and were able to pick up two key victories. Whitehall opened the week Thursday with a 63-50 overtime victory over Anaconda, and won their fifth in a row Friday 61-40 over the Panthers.     Despite being shorthanded, the Whitehall High School wrestling team was still able to put up a strong showing at last week's Class B/C Duals at Great Falls Central. The Trojans finished the in fourth out of 17 teams at the one-day tournament. Whitehall opened the tournament with a 43-15 win over Simms, and a 36-27 victory over Columbus.     The Whitehall High School Speech and Debate team had great results at last week's Divisional Tournament in Missoula. Senior Rebecca Meyer led the way for the Trojans with a first-place finish in Impromptu. Karlie Wagner finished third in Humorous Oral Interpretation, and Issie Coleman and Bradley Morrison finished fifth in Humorous Duo.     Pool players from across Southwest Montana will be making their way to Whitehall later this week for the 16th annual Cori Bishop, Dave McLaughlin, Steve Dyson Memorial Pool Tournament. The popular yearly event is scheduled to take place Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21.   • Apex application approved by state

    There was good news to end 2017 at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine in Whitehall. At the Community Transition Advisory Committee last week, Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus said the state has accepted their application for the proposed Apex Project, and the next step would be for Tetra Tech of Missoula to complete an Environmental Assessment.   • Officials considering 8 period school day

    With attendance numbers increasing at the two Whitehall secondary schools, officials are looking into the possibility of eight period days. In her monthly report, Principal Hannah Nieskens reported increases at both the high school and middle school. Nieskens said there were two new students at the high school for a total of 141. At the same time last year, the number was 122. Nieskens reported a total of 88 at the middle school, with the number 82 in 2017.     Two days after a botched attempt to take an ATM at the Cardwell Store, two suspects were able to steal an ATM at an Exxon store off Interstate 15 in Idaho Falls.     The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce is looking to move away from the Futurity Event at the annual Frontier Days Celebration in July.
